Do many Sidwell families belong to the Chevy Chase Club?

Anonymous
OP here. Thank you for all of the responses. We know and like many families who go to Chevy, most of whom have kids at Beauvoir with our kids. It's a nice community from all we can tell.

It will be a few years before our kids apply to Sidwell, and we know that the odds for admission are difficult. But if it's our first choice, I think we should think of it as a real possibility and think twice before spending a lot of time and money joining a club without much overlap with school families. We certainly don't need a whole lot of families from school to go to the same club, but it would be nice to know if there's some kind of group (carpools and buddies for tennis, camps, etc.). We could wait to see where our kids go after Beauvoir, but that just means a few extra years of not bring able to use the club for swim team, etc.

Thanks for the replies.

This is one of the strangest threads I have ever read in the privates forum....

Well, FWIW, Chevy and other nice clubs have reciprocity. So if your kids have a lot of friends going to Columbia, Chevy will let them spend money and buy food at Chevy, using their Columbia number, and vice versa. So it's not too much of a limitation.

If you like the club and want to join then by all means join. I can't imagine waiting for a few years on the off chance that your kids might be still interested in going to Sidwell AND get in. Use the club when your kids are the right age for it. It's actually better for kids to have friends outside of school as well as in school and if your kids have friends at Beauvoir maybe they will want to keep up with them through the club.

As an aside - what is it you like about Sidwell? Just surprised that a Beauvoir/Chevy type family would be so enthusiastic about Sidwell. Not saying that in a snarky way at all, just thinking you might want to be really sure about this before turning down NCS/STA.

I don't know many Sidwell families at Chevy, but why should one school dictate your entire social network? If you're at Beauvoir then you already know a ton of Chevy families, and wouldn't it be good for your kids to have a venue in which they can see their old friends even if they are no longer in school together? We look at CCC as a great place for our kids to befriend and spend time with kids they don't see at school every day. The teams (hockey, skating, swimming, diving) are great low-pressure high-quality experiences for the kids.

This is exactly why I knew Beauvoir was not for us.

Maybe you won't get into either.

Wow, just wow. You already have your toddlers going to Sidwell. Or, if you are disappointed, Beauvoir. I realize that the Chevy Chase Club has changed since my youth when it was a segregated club, but I think you'll fit right in there.

Maybe I travel in the wrong circles, but I have lived in DC for over 30 years and never seen reference to "Chevy" for that club.

Same here. Something doesn't smell right about the OP

Same here, but times are a changing. It sounds wrong to me but I have heard people call it that recently.

Hmmm. Well I grew up going there and it's pretty common for everyone to call it "Chevy" or the club. For the people who go regularly, it would be fairly wordy to say "Chevy Chase Country Club" every time...

Members call it Chevy.

Or "the Club" as in, are you going to the Club today?

Nope. Members call it "The Club."

I don't have the money for either CCC or Sidwell, but I can certainly understand OPs question. CCC has lots of kid friendly things like indoor bowling, hockey/ice skating, a nice outdoor pool and summer camps for members. But it sounds like a down the road question for OP for either going to Sidwell or joining the country club.
