Exactly. Interesting article. New poster. If someone went as far as suing for libel and defamation of character and sued to obtain the letters written against them and more importantly any other spoken words against them which they believe to be untrue, then they could bring in witnesses, if any, who have heard the person(s) that wrote or said them make racist or anti-religious comments. It wouldn't be that difficult to then prove that their views could be part of the reason they were against their application, especially if they have kept quiet for others who are equally offensive. It also would likely be embarrassing for the person(s) that wrote the letters, if they did make racist statements and they then became public through a libel/defamation suit. |
Isn't everyone a guest? Or is it British style and some people lodge there? The changing room, even without the mess on the floor, was dingy and damp. I would want it dry with fluffy towels, perhaps an attendant, fresh paint. Don't people pay A LOT? |
| Comments that Chevy Chase Club discriminates against against Jews or any other religious group OR that it blackballs anyone are both ill-informed and ridiculous. I am a member at Chevy Chase, and I can tell you that we have numerous Jewish members AND that votes by the Board on prospective members are by a simple majority ---- NO blackballing. Moreover, the idea that most of the members there are necessarily Republicans or conservatives is silly. I have no idea what party most of my friends at the Club are, but I do know that "liberal" ideas are freely expressed by many of the members, along with conservative ideas --- just as is true in society here at large. |
What percentage of members are black, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, or Jewish? Has there ever been an open discussion about the racist past of the CCC? How many active members actually nominate or encourage non-white families to become members? It's way too easy to do nothing and then claim that you're not racist because you're not running around with tiki torches. Racism survives because otherwise good people fail to question the status quo. |

I am the poster from 18:21.
I made my post even though it did not relate directly to the Sidwell Friends question (I don't know the answer to that question) to correct two misstatements in that thread about Chevy Chase Club. I.e., to say that we DON"T discriminate, and there is no such thing as blackball there relative to applicants. I have no interest in getting into a prolonged discussion with the poster from 18:43 although I disagree with him/her. But one thing I don't like is being misquoted here. So to correct a third misstatement, I did NOT write that "comments that Chevy Chase Club ACTIVELY discriminates against Jews, etc.... are ill-informed and ridiculous." That statement would imply that I believe that the Club may discriminate in some lesser faction. I said that they don't discriminate PERIOD. It is my sincere belief, based on my experiences there, that good candidates for membership of whatever faith, color, or ethnicity would be welcomed and admitted if proposed by a member. That is all that I am saying - nothing more, nothing less. |
NP. There is a crowd of anti-cc people. I am one. My parents are members and I grew up in one. I hate them and think less of people who join them. |
You're obviously not a wasp. An attendant standing by while I dry my hair sounds like nouveau-riche, gaudy hell. Like something out of a Jackie Collins novel. |
Which locker room were you in? The spa like one does exist but maybe you shouldn't have access. Do your hosts a favor and tell them you are too good to be a guest at their club and not to invite you again. |
+1 I can't even think of what "gross" one she means but I'm guessing from her personality her hosts probably shoved her into a broom closet and assured her it was the real thing (as any sane person would) |
+1. And then you leave a diamond earring on her attendant tray and say "these have always brought me luck." |
You were at a subpar club and didn't do the sports? Anyone in a nice club with fine dining and great tennis/golf/swimming appreciates and enjoys the experience. How can you not? I think you haven't really experienced it at a nice place. |
| We don't know a lot of people who belong to the club, but of the few that we do one is Jewish and also is at Sidwell so not sure the club is really discriminating. |
|
So as long it is a nice club it doesn't matter that it discriminates? |
"CCs" and "fine dining" do not belong in the same sentence. Sniff sniff A food/ restaurant snob |
