We went to a different club. It was our first year of club volleyball and we didn't do any moco clinics before. Moco did good job running the tryout, dd was evaluated fairly given they only saw her the first time. If we went to their clinics, I think she would make Moco1. I saw Moco1 played in tournaments, dd was about the same level as average of the team. Given that they only saw DD once and gave her a position in team 2, I think it is fair.

NP and I think it’s all luck. Generally this is true. But DD didn’t get any offers from her first round of tryouts last year and we scrambled to find last chance makeup tryouts. She went to those and got two offers. They were clubs that turned down girls at the main tryouts. There weren’t many at the last chance make ups on those final days, but these were not super competitive clubs.

The entire process is so frustrating. My daughter wasn’t even looked at with the masses of girls that showed up at the main tryouts. She was only seen when there weren’t many fewer at the end.

Obviously go to the tryouts at the beginning but don’t give up if nothing works out. Keep trying if she wants to play. Luck is very important. I feel you about not getting noticed with masses of girls. My DD was left without proper evaluation in one tryout that I don't think we will ever consider that club this year. And DD was lucky to get the club she really wanted last minute before close time. But I was impressed on MOCO's try out process (after experiencing the aweful one). Out of curiosity, was the travel team you mentioned metro? We learned to not get our hopes high even got invite clinics, yes, not everyone got it, but not few either. Also we don't know what position the team is looking for and see potential in DD if she does not have experience in that position and willing to give her a chance to grow.

No, she did not play for Metro or Paramount or attend either of their tryouts. She completely underestimated the competition at the other clubs, right under the level of these two in VA.

I learned from this forum that things got suddenly worse and competitive on certain age level, like 14 and 16, maybe your DD's bad experience was during those times.

It is interesting how different personal experiences are. In our case, it was the MOCO tryout that left us with a bad taste. My DD was kept on the bottom court for the entire tryout. It is difficult to show any skills when you play with beginners, so she was hoping that she would eventually be given a chance on a higher court. They may have already had enough players on my DD position and they were sorting through those. But when you pay for a tryout, you expect them at least to pretend that they are interested in your skills. She felt ignored for the entire tryout, so we won't go to MOCO tryouts anymore.

Does every club have invite clinics? Last year we didn’t know about these and were clueless. DD went into tryouts thinking she had a chance when she had never even gotten an invite.

She’s been to some clinics this year. Should we assume every club is having invite only clinics? Only some mention it on their websites.

Not all clubs have invite only clinics. If she goes to clinics, see if she is the one shine/struggle. I would tryout for the ones that dd is at least average on the court. Read some cues from the coach. If coach says good thing to DD about how she handles the balls, or can already call her by name far from the court without looking at her name tag, I know she is noticed and will be more willing to try out that club.

We know 2 families that had the same experience at MOCO tryouts too, where their girls who ended up with 1st time offers from better clubs in the end got funneled to bottom court from start of MOCO tryout and there were times it seemed like no one at all was watching them.

If you end up of the bottom court of a tryout there could be a bunch of reasons: the club doesn't need your position, the coach prefers someone else, you don't have the physical "stats" they are looking for, your DD's energy lagged, a skill wasn't good, etc. And sometimes it's just luck, they see you for a small period of time in a large group of people and if you aren't standing out right then they move on to someone else.

As parents we tend to focus on what happened to our DD during club tryouts. Its natural and appropriate. We believe our girls are great players or at least "better than that other girl" who got noticed.

The reality is that every year there are a lot of players who end up on the bottom court at tryouts and are understandably frustrated by the result. Clubs only take 10-12 players per team and the they have 3-5x+ more players than that trying out. The math dictates someone has to end up an bottom court. Unless you are a D1 P4 lock of a player who everyone knows and recognizes, it happens to everyone at some point.

Our DD plays in college now and it happened to her multiple times during her journey. Many times we thought she was "better" than someone else that was chosen. For her though, she was understandably disappointed in the moment and then chose to move on. We learned something from our DD in those situations. You can continue to dwell on a perceived slight of the past or focus your efforts on the future.

It was MEVC
