Teacher fired, charged with rape at gilman

This kind of lurid claim seems unlikely to me

Both campuses are pretty deserted after 10 pm or so.

^ This is precisely how Bendann got away with 15 of sex crimes he perpetrated on the students. He had his supporters constantly pushing a false narrative. Every time another rumor of the abuse erupted, his friends would pipe up how unbelievable the rumors were. Shame on you all. Bendann wasn’t just “strange”, he was an evil criminal operating under your noses. All the naysayers need to be held accountable.

I don’t know many details, but I know I am grateful to especially the first boys/young men who came forward and told someone about the abuse. Thank you, that shows real courage. I don’t need to know your names but I know you have character, courage, and a willingness to get help. I’m grateful to you. This is a huge thing you’ve done to make the world better. I hope you find peace and love as you deserve.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the boys told Gilman headmaster they better hurry up and immediately fire Bendann, because police will be investigating.

I certainly don’t blame any teenagers who heard rumors and didn’t report them, although I wonder if they did and if adults did. I’m following the story, and offering support to the community and especially to the boys who were abused and reported it. Thank God they did. They are heroes in a horrific story.

Current upper school parent— there were no rumors of the abuse until last month. Everyone was shocked. Bendann was very successful in manipulating his victims into silence.

The school openly allowed him to sleep over with students AGAINST school policy. The school clearly knew about it and did NOTHING. What kind of administrators allow teachers to sleep over with students with zero supervision by any other adult? Gilman already had a horrific recent history of student sex assault by teachers.

teachers are allowed to babysit just like in my sons public school, we use his teachers as sitters all the time. That’s not against school policy. Most schools I know allow that.

Most schools, both public and private, *do not* allow it for various reasons, including possible favoritism and other very legitimate concerns. I’d be shocked if there’s a public school system that doesn’t doesn’t have a prohibition on teachers and staff being employed by enrolled families outside of school. Which district are you in?

Please share how you’d propose to effectively protect school children by school employees.

Anyone? How should administrators be punished when they fail to uphold helpful policies, and children are horribly abused as a result? sp

I don’t know that anyone failed to uphold any policies. Babysitting, housesitting, hiring a teacher to drive the kids to practice in the summer, hiring a teacher as a private tutor, all that was allowed at the time the abuse happened. Just like it is allowed in many schools currently. I hear Gilman has hired an outside company to review all of their current policies, in addition to not allowing babysitting, housesitting, etc any longer. Hopefully this works going forward but most importantly we need to teach our children what is not appropriate that it is ok to come forward.

why ddn't they have this kind of polcy review in 2021 when they came forward with their prior abuse investigation? it's negligent.

I think they did have this kind of review as part of the investigation in 2021. It’s honestly not clear if Chris bendann was still babysitting and housesitting after 2021. We have to wait and see how the current investigation pans out and what the other victims say.

He never stopped babysitting or any of his other outside employment with families with kids at Gilman. That’s already known. He was still babysitting up until the time he was fired.

The police have instructed the school to not compromise their investigation by questioning anyone so it will be a long time until the school is in a position to do much investigating.

But I also think that schools can become so cultish and insular that reporting it, and sending a beloved member of the staff (and he was beloved and celebrated by many years of middle schoolers) to prison, becomes problematic.
Let's make schools less "cultish" and crap like this will be reported more freely. They only indoctrinate to ensure alumni donations anyway.

Being 'the beloved teacher' can be part of the facade as well.

Anxiety, depression, alcohol and drug use are some of the many indications that your child may getting sexually assaulted. Do not allow your child to be alone with any teacher from a school with a history of sex abuse.

Predator teachers know which schools tend to be more accommodating of their perverted behavior.

At the bottom of this article it say decades of sexual abuse has been investigated at the school, from 1950-2008.
Awful and how is it still a school?

At least they made the effort to document it. I graduated from a DMV girl’s school that swept all cases under the rug, and there are many

Documented in the form of an investigation after the fact.

No they knew during. They didn’t bother to investigate until it went public.

This is damning. Educators are legally mandated reporters of any SUSPECTED abuse. They’ll be held accountable.

“Housesitting” has come up multiple times as something that teachers should not be allowed to do.

Isn’t “housesitting” just staying at a family’s house when the entire family is away?

Like is that really a problem? Who is going to get abused when no one is there?

Several posters on this thread are trying to defend the perp with irrelevant nonsense like the “housesitting”. Issue is doing overnights. You know that, PP. Big problem for the school.

Yeah my question is not directed toward this particular situation. I’m just asking whether people actually think teachers shouldn’t be allowed to housesit for students’ families.
