If he didn’t notice that he was only flying about 100ft off the ground, or pay attention to the air traffic controller controller telling him he was too low, what makes you think lights would have made any difference? |
Wow, you all sound like idiots. Small planes should be banned? Why? The airpark should be closed? Should cars of about the same weight (most of them) be banned and highways closed? Because, compared to aviation, the roads are a slaughterhouse of people getting killed (which didn't even happen here). You friends, the couple who were dumb enough to buy a home near an airport when they don't like airplane noise-"they agree" the airport which has been there long before their house was built and brings in millions of $ of revenue to the surrounding area every year should be shut down? Really? Well I guess that settles it. It's like people who buy new homes in recently developed farm lands them complain of the animal smells of the neighboring farms. |
Your cars should be banned. |
Needs a control tower? You are very naive and know nothing about aviation if you think a control tower makes things safer. You don't really understand what a controller does either. Frederick County Municipal Airport is the second busiest airport in Maryland in terms of operations and, before it got a control tower, it was a lot safer and no one died. My plane is based there and I can tell you this first hand. After they got a control tower, 4 people died and the controller in the tower was a big contributing factor to the accident. Sorry to say but this was all on the pilot. He had what we pilots like to call, gethomeitis which can be fatal. He never should have attempted that landing at that time, in those conditions, at that airport but instead, diverted to somewhere with better visibility which would be very inconvenient. In hindsight, a lot more convenient than the outcome from his bad choice. |
I’m pretty sure the post you were replying to was illustrating the same point, just less explicitly. |
Any risk is unacceptable. -DCUM |
+1 Idiot is an understatement. They buy next to an airport and then complain that there’s an airport and plane noises! |
Yes. He should have diverted. It sounds like he was flying in conditions above his capabilities, and should have gone to a different airport and moved the plane “home” later. It’s inconvenient and can be expensive, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. |
Then why did they close the schools? A previous poster said they were closed because they had to do a switchover, but that's not true. |
| What value does this airport bring to the county? Genuinely asking. |
A bunch of d bags can fly their toy planes in and out of there. It keeps the d bags happy, I guess. |
Is there another airport nearby? Did he have enough fuel to fly to another location? It was foggy on Sunday in the whole region. |
There is an airfield in Laytonville (http://www.laytonsvilleairport.com/). It's private though, so it likely costs more money to land there. The fog was still high at 5:30. So he flew through the fog, but it wasn't foggy below 150ft or so. I assume he chose to fly below the fog. Thinking he'd come in at 200ft, but descended too quickly. He had a window that he was shooting for and missed. Diverting to Davis would have been a better option if visibility was truly that poor. There are red flashing lights on the towers. |
Well, i am not saying that. I own 3 cars after all. But I would never own one of these small planes. So I’m ok banning those. |
Thank you. Whoever suggested that the County should just put lights on the towers is an idiot. Of course anything this tall has lights on it already and that’s a federal regulation. |
