Power Outage Montogomery County

Not gonna lie, I was scared and thought the Russians might've done something. I'm a bit relieved it had to do with this small plane crash. Praying the pilot and passenger are OK.

Are you ok?!

Plane may be a piper cherokee so this isn’t someone’s first plane nor is it a starter plane like a Cessna 152

It was a M20J

Our neighborhood in Rockville is out. What’s weird is we also had lights flicker at around 10:30 last night and and a brief outage again early this morning. WTF?

Yes, but they were landing at the airpark, probably going about 70-75 knots at the time.

How are Mooney planes so fast? The m-18 has 65 hp and has a top speed of 138 mph

Just saying that plane is remarkable . 200 something hp and it has a faster cruising speed that most ww2 era fighters

We had the same happen last night in Aspen Hill. My DH was convinced it was a hack when power went out today.

Wonder if this means MCPS might be closed tomorrow.

Not likely all of mcps would close, only the schools affected by outages early in the morning.

If you haven't lost power yet, you still may. They can rescue the plane passengers until the power is cut to the wires...right now the wires up there are still live. So I imagine more will lose power before they start restoring.

I am hoping to lose power and have school and work canceled.

After this and the crash that killed the Gemmell family a few years ago, I think it's reasonable to have a conversation about whether continuing to host an airpark in that location, with amateur pilots and no ATC routinely overflying houses and infrastructure on the landing path, is a good idea. Obviously we don't know what happened here but 88% of plane crashes overall are due to pilot error so it's not out of line to assume the pilot may have screwed up here and not seen something, particularly in this weather. Hopefully this power outage hasn't killed anyone through losing home medical equipment or traffic lights not working, or hospital operations in the blackout zone being disrupted.

Agree...

Same here in Silver Spring. When the power went out today, I immediately thought of the lights flickering last night and thought it was connected.
