Thanks! Our letter also states "Parents and students". I didn't notice this earlier. |
Hi I am in a similar situation like you. But your DD seem to have better scores then my DC. We only had NNAT score of 160 and no COGAT. BUT DRA levels were only 16. I am suprised that you did not get in , maybe you need to do the NNAT test. I think you should appeal. |
Hi
Has got accepted with a GBRS of 8. |
Not a typo. They have to do it during business/school hours when the teachers/staff are there. Just like kindergarten orientation. I really want my DH to go but he can't so it will just be me and DC. |
DS was not accepted. CoGAT scores were 116 119 127 NNAT 137. GBRS 12. Should I get him tested for WISC and re-appeal? |
If you don't mind asking, What were your child scores and DRA levels? |
If you decide to appeal.. If you have not already, I would highly recommend asking for a copy of the file. This will give you the work samples. I was surprised how shoddy of an example the school submitted, it was a sloppy science drawing with a spelling error. Ds has not missed a spelling word all year, and is actually a decent artist. But writing is one of his big strengths, as is math. Tough to put an impressive math sample in. Sometimes, it depends what they have on hand when they make the packet. Also, look closely at the GBRS, I think a 12 is more than sufficient, but perhaps look at the area that was a bit lower, and try to bolster it up with work samples, or in a letter from you, explain how you see strengths in areas that may not have been shown originally. Since your ds already has a strong GBRS, and NNAT score (and CogAt is pretty strong too, though not over the threshold) I think a strong WISC score would probably suffice. The bottom line is, do you feel your child is being adequately challenged in the regular class? If so, I would not appeal, but if you feel he is not being challenged, and have the ability to appeal, go for it. You always have the right to parent refer in subsequent years, which is what we did. (accepted this year) The only disadvantage is your child would have some catching up to do, especially in math. |

Thank you. He is a pretty bright student and could surely do with more challenging work. I think I will get his WISC done and since he is good at a lot of extra curricular activities I will add those certificates/samples to the appeal file too. |
Hey PP, my DS has scores similar to your child and an identical GBRS (12) and was also deemed not eligible. We are having the WISC done this week (there's a whole cottage industry of private psycologists, plus GMU, who can turn around the results far ahead of the June 1 deadline). We are going to look carefully at the WISC scores before deciding whether to appeal -- if the Full Scale IQ is not in the 120's, we probably won't appeal because that would mean that DS (who is wonderful in so many ways) probably is not suited to the AAP classroom. Good luck to you and your DC! |
Hi, DC COGAT score 135, GBRS 8... the commentary by DC teacher states that DC is doing advanced level math, good problem solving skills, aced in the math challenge project, teach other kids who are having difficulty, DC was the only one in the classroom to solve math problems n quiz & DC learns very quickly....BUT she gave 8 for GBRS.... DC get all O's on her report card.
We are not sure if we should appeal or not. Is the low GBRS going to affect even if we do the WISC testing and she gets good score? |

I'm pretty sure they just look at the new materials you give them. If she does well on WISC then she should get in, at least that's how I understand it.
