If you have not already, I would highly recommend asking for a copy of the file.  This will give you the work samples.  I was surprised how shoddy of an example the school submitted, it was a sloppy science drawing with a spelling error.  Ds has not missed a spelling word all year, and is actually a decent artist.  But writing is one of his big strengths, as is math.  Tough to put an impressive math sample in.  Sometimes, it depends what they have on hand when they make the packet.

Also, look closely at the GBRS, I think a 12 is more than sufficient, but perhaps look at the area that was a bit lower, and try to bolster it up with work samples, or in a letter from you, explain how you see strengths in areas that may not have been shown originally.

Since your ds already has a strong GBRS, and NNAT score (and CogAt is pretty strong too, though not over the threshold) I think a strong WISC score would probably suffice.  The bottom line is, do you feel your child is being adequately challenged in the regular class?  If so, I would not appeal, but if you feel he is not being challenged, and have the ability to appeal, go for it.

You always have the right to parent refer in subsequent years, which is what we did. (accepted this year) The only disadvantage is your child would have some catching up to do, especially in math.
