Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Except for small one offs, Fcps does not include residential development in CIP projections. That is alarming and disqualifying. |

I very rarely invoke "equity" as a pretext for anything. I do think considerations around "equitable access to programming" are relevant if they propose to do things like eliminating pupil placement options, since pupil placement is the primary way that families whose schools currently don't offer the same programs or electives as certain other schools can secure access to such programs or electives. |
Interesting. When someone's kid has an IEP they can get whatever they want and are told yes for every request. Yet the minute a non-IEP kid needs something like NOT changing schools in the middle of their school career now the schools say no. I really don't want to pay to have my kids deal with this. |
Equity isn’t the only thing left! There are still a lot of split feeders and attendance islands that haven’t been addressed. A popular sentiment is not breaking up friend groups, right? |
|
Fair. Way less offensive than some of the oft discussed changes in this thread. Probably would prove a lot less divisive too, though I’m not sure if that would result in any of the split feeders or attendance islands getting redistricted to a poorer performing school. |
Honestly, I haven't read a lot about people using equity as an argument - just lots of people on this forum throwing around "equity warrior". Equitable access to programming is different and a reason to keep legitimate pupil placement options. |
I think the fairest option would be transfer by right to neighboring schools out of schools that fall below certain performance metrics with FCPS providing transportation. People are scared of rezoning because they know that certain schools are flat out failing and that FCPS has no solutions |
That just underscores how you are focused only on maintaining the Langley pyramid as currently constituted. The elimination of split feeders and attendance islands could result in many situations where students were redistricted to a "poorer performing school" (i.e., a school ranked lower or with lower average SAT scores). The families that are potentially affected are just not coming on here every day and alleging that any such moves could only be the result of "equity warriors." Examples would include making Carson feed exclusively to Westfield, making Timber Lane feed exclusively to Falls Church, making Rolling Valley feed exclusively to Lewis, or reassigning the Sangster island to South County. |
That is, in essence, what's required under state law when a school doesn't meet accreditation benchmarks. Dogwood ES in Reston was in that situation and students there had a right to transfer (with transportation) to nearby schools for several years until Dogwood was back in good standing. However, if you had more schools that were actually in this category (and not just deemed "failing" because people don't want to send their kids there) it could end up being very expensive for FCPS. FCPS would have to focus on remediation plans and, in the interim, accommodate kids at other schools. |
Sorry, you couldn’t be more wrong. I would only be fine with the elimination of split feeders and attendance islands if it is like for like or it has the overwhelming support of the families living in the area. I’m not interested in screwing over these families. The exact opposite is true. Perhaps look in the mirror? |
What planet do you live on? Bwaaahahahahaha |
They actually did revise it a lot. They took away a lot of the criteria to consider when doing boundary changes. They dumbed it down to 4 the current 4 (equitable access, overcrowding, transportation…. It’s a lot easier to move boundaries now than it was before |
I responded to your statement that you were unaware if the elimination of split feeders or attendance islands "would result in any of the split feeders or attendance islands getting redistricted to a poorer performing school." That would not have required much analysis to figure out. |
