Middle School Crystal Ball - Look forward to 2015/16 School year

Knowing what you know about DC demogrpahic shifts and new charter schools, how competititive do you think the lotteries will be for Stuart Hobson or Hardy for the 2015-2016 school year for 6th grade?

Will it be similar to now, or even harder to get in OOB?

Thanks.

I would bet easier. I think BASIS and Latin and HUM&S and other charters are really going to be pulling kids away that would otherwise want to go to Hardy and S-H. My eldest is in 4th. We are neither IB for S-H nor Hardy (nor Deal) so this is something I've given some thought to. i like to think by then that things will be organized so that every child will get into their #1 choice for middle school. fingers crossed!

With Deal off the table as an OOB option, Hardy and S-H will face increased enrollment pressures.

14:33, I agree with you too. I also think that Kelly Miller will make a drastic impact by 2015-16 too.

Please tell me more PP! What about Kelly Miller?

Also in the mix is Cap City. They have an increase in class size from 50 4th graders to 80 5th graders. So 5th grade is an entrance year.

In 2012-13, Cap City is still underenrolled for 5th & 6th, but doubt that will last.

I wish the charters wouldn't make 5th an entry year (Cap City, Basis and Latin). There are a bunch of decent DCPS schools that go through 5th, and a good number of parents who would like their kids to stay in elementary through 5th. But maybe it actually makes schools that start in 6th easier to get into because other kids will be set at Latin or whereever by then.

How about Frances Stevens? Any hope this will be a decent MS option ... we have a longer time horizon, say 2019/2020.

IT will have middle grades at that point.

This might be a chance for an OOBer to get in fifth grade via lottery and then feed to a more desirable middle school, though

I just don't want to move my kid for one year. I might consider it for Watkins, not because its great but it's close so my kid would know people.

IT, CM and MV should all have middle school grades by then. However, these schools are all in their infancy so there is no real way of knowing how they will be doing by then.

Given that it's under-subscribed, what is "even harder" supposed to mean? How difficult is just walking through the door?

It's not that big a deal to move a child for a year, especially if it eliminates future lottery stress AND introduces DC to the group they'll be with for middle and high school. I find it much harder to get acquainted with DC's friends' parents now, compared to elementary...it's easier to scope out possible overlax parents or unwelcome influences...

if
i faced a poor middle or high school IB I'd certainly try OOB for a year

SH 6th grade lottery for 2012-13 had about 115 applicants for 15 slots. I don't think anyone walked thru the door in September, but I might be wrong.

In 2011-12, Hardy was underscribed for 6th, but in 2012-13, there were more 6th grade applicants than slots for the initial lottery. I don't know what happened this Sept, perhaps Hardy went thru the 6th grade wait list as student peeeled off to Basis, etc. But as of March OOB lottery (the only on line results without calling the school), both SH and Hardy were competitive for 6th.
