But it seems ridiculous that the high school and middle school teachers have totally checked out, not answering emails, posting nothing on schoology, not updating grades. Kids (those that care) could be using this time to catch up or study. I get it that lots won’t do that, but some will and it seems relatively low effort to just do the bare minimum like check your email.
Who is emailing their teacher during the 3-week break?

It was their vacation. They were actually being told *not* to check email by their admin during that time.

Yes and why the F! would any of us post work on Schoology that kids who ARE NOT IN SCHOOL won’t do. It’s like you just have to be punitive against someone, for some reason, whether it makes any sense to be or not.

This is the attitude that emerged during COVID from the teachers and when I lost faith in the school district. I get not answering emails on vacation. But this week is not vacation and my kids have been using the time to study for end of quarter tests. I just have average kids too, not AAP type kids. Bizarre. Any other job would expect people to at lest check email.

If your doctor’s office closed due to weather do you expect them to answer emails?

DP. Doctor's offices don't close for an entire week due to weather. Stupid comparison. Not answering emails during the two weeks of winter break is completely expected. Not answering them this week is just lazy. Many teachers are great, but there are some straight up lazy and unprofessional teachers who get away with it because there is a shortage. Anyone who is professional and takes their job seriously can answer some emails as they sit at home not having to go in to work. This mentality of "I'm not on contract" would not fly in most other professions. Don't expect to be treated like a white collar professional if you act like an hourly worker.

Every time someone on this page tries to compare school to something in the outside world, another person will say that they’re not similar. So maybe you should stop expecting school to be open. If it’s so dissimilar to the doctors, dentists, etc then why are you expecting it to be open?

I’ve had horrible experiences with white collar employees throughout the last 3 decades, being a white collar employee doesn’t make you better than an hourly employee.

Where did I say that schools should be open? I understand that VDOT has failed us in this respect. There is no reason a teacher who is getting and extra week of winter break can’t respond to a few emails… even if it’s to say something like “just confirming I received this and will get back to you with an answer as soon as I know more”, if it’s something that a teacher can’t answer right now. This is basic professionalism.

I also never said white collar professionals are better than hourly workers. But being a white collar professional comes with different expectations, such as bringing work home with you sometimes and being responsive to emails. This mentality of not lifting a finger outside of contracted hours is not how white collar professionals work.

I guess this depends upon teacher to teacher, my kids' teachers at Longfellow have been very responsive and are actually actively coordinating test retakes or any other questions, I know because my kid wrote to three of them, I am grateful as they don't have to do it

my kid says FCPS kids are so lucky, in MCPS schools opened on 1/2 and kids already had 2 days of school last week and again went back to school today with a 2 hour delay.

You only got 3 in. We got 8 in+

Again, it' not about 3 inches vs 8 inches. It's about VDOT not plowing the neighborhood roads.

FCPS kids started school a week early on Aug 19th, so things balance out I suppose.

Sorry, I have a "real job" in the "real-world".

No, our school days are more, we have 182 days school year while FCPS has only 180 days

At this point she needs to just tell us we are going so we can get our minds right.

I'm one of the posters that have been saying how bad his neighborhood is. The plows still haven't come through but today's sun really did a good job on the icy roads. I lot of bare patches out there now. Still alot of ice but much less so I am now going 50/50 on tomorrow. If it was a Monday, I'd bet schools would be open but since it's a Friday. I think it's 50/50 at best leaning towards being closed. I think Friday and Saturday's sun plus Sundays 40 degrees and sunny will have the roads in great shape for Monday.

It was sarcasm - making fun of DCUM-ets who can’t parent and trash talk FCPS and its teachers.

It’s really bad, as are 40% of residential streets in McLean. Did a fleet of plows break down? Seems like a major oversight.

I don’t think they should give up just because it’s a Friday. My DS teacher posted that they are doing review tomorrow for a test that’s next week.
