Who is emailing their teacher during the 3-week break?

It was their vacation. They were actually being told *not* to check email by their admin during that time.

Yes and why the F! would any of us post work on Schoology that kids who ARE NOT IN SCHOOL won’t do. It’s like you just have to be punitive against someone, for some reason, whether it makes any sense to be or not.

This is the attitude that emerged during COVID from the teachers and when I lost faith in the school district. I get not answering emails on vacation. But this week is not vacation and my kids have been using the time to study for end of quarter tests. I just have average kids too, not AAP type kids. Bizarre. Any other job would expect people to at lest check email.

If your doctor’s office closed due to weather do you expect them to answer emails?

DP. Doctor's offices don't close for an entire week due to weather. Stupid comparison. Not answering emails during the two weeks of winter break is completely expected. Not answering them this week is just lazy. Many teachers are great, but there are some straight up lazy and unprofessional teachers who get away with it because there is a shortage. Anyone who is professional and takes their job seriously can answer some emails as they sit at home not having to go in to work. This mentality of "I'm not on contract" would not fly in most other professions. Don't expect to be treated like a white collar professional if you act like an hourly worker.

Every time someone on this page tries to compare school to something in the outside world, another person will say that they’re not similar. So maybe you should stop expecting school to be open. If it’s so dissimilar to the doctors, dentists, etc then why are you expecting it to be open?

I’ve had horrible experiences with white collar employees throughout the last 3 decades, being a white collar employee doesn’t make you better than an hourly employee.

Sorry, I have a "real job" in the "real-world".

DP, but if you had a real job in the real world didn't you have to leave your house? Everyone on our street who had to leave their house was out shoveling Monday afternoon and again Tuesday morning so they could get to work - which I was at by Tuesday afternoon.

Yes, but I didn’t shovel the street as PP suggested.

Yes, actually I do. And they write back! I have rescheduled appointments and had questions answered for a medical issue. I did it twice this week with different doctors.

You’re an anomaly, because the rest of us don’t expect that.

Anonymous wrote:Wait Fairfax was closed AGAIN on Thursday? lol. Howard and Baltimore counties were back Wednesday and got like, 3 inches less of snow. What are you guys doing down there?

Being a large county with a fair number of semi-rural and rural areas that have dirt roads, sharp drop offs with no shoulders and hairpin turns.

Somehow a greater percentage of our kids can actually read despite using more snow days. What are you guys doing up there?

Fairfax is 3x bigger than Howard County and almost twice the size in square miles. A lot more to manage in terms of snow removal. Talk to our governor.

If I as a teacher had known we’d be out for a full week ahead of time, I’d maybe have been able to update calendars, respond to grade questions with definite answers, etc. but we have been kept in total limbo just like you guys. I’d rather not play catch up every day making micro-adjustments and just deal with my plans once I know for sure the kids are back.

Where did I say that schools should be open? I understand that VDOT has failed us in this respect. There is no reason a teacher who is getting and extra week of winter break can’t respond to a few emails… even if it’s to say something like “just confirming I received this and will get back to you with an answer as soon as I know more”, if it’s something that a teacher can’t answer right now. This is basic professionalism.

I also never said white collar professionals are better than hourly workers. But being a white collar professional comes with different expectations, such as bringing work home with you sometimes and being responsive to emails. This mentality of not lifting a finger outside of contracted hours is not how white collar professionals work.
