A lot of people may not know this, but Charlie actually had a really good sense of humor and would laugh at himself often.

I am 50-year-old mom and I get that, if you don't ever look at social media you may not have heard of him, but if you have teens you absolutely should have.

Charlie Kirk was uber famous. There are memes about the memes about him.

I am looking forward to when the 48-hours expire and we can discuss some of his views here. I wholeheartedly respect DCUM's rules and I condemn in the strongest possible terms what happened to Charlie Kirk. No one asks or deserves to me murdered. Political violence is horrible for all of us. But Charlie Kirk was a very famous public figure and there is no contradiction between denouncing the assassination and critiquing his views.

I’ve never heard of him nor have my tweens. We aren’t big into SM though. Is Kirk kinda like Mr. Beast? I have heard of Mr. Beast? Is that his name? He had his own brand of lunchables.

If you had an 18 year old boy he would have heard of him. My college freshman said the killing was all his team talked about at practice yesterday. The team is a mix of conservative and liberal kids and opinions on Kirk ranged from adoration to disgust. He said they had a respectful discussion, which gave me great hope.

So Kirk was basically the radical right conservative version of Mr. Beast? Along these lines?

He is popular enough that South Park had a bit on him.

Mr. Beast is popular too, possibly moreso because he has his own brand of lunchables and even I have heard of Mr. Beast. He is also friends with a trans woman named Chris Tyson. And I am not on social media and I know this. Mr. Beast is also very popular.

MrBeast is the most subscribed YouTuber in the world and of all time.

yeah, don't bring him into it with his horrible and overpriced chocolate bars...

True, but I’d rather have my kids follow him than some people.

Can you imagine the reaction from the GOP if the Democrats did something like this for Soros?

Essentially my mother honed in on how the media is desperately flailing to make people care about Charlie Kirk more than the dozens of children dying every day due to gun violence.

While the death of any child, under any circumstances, is a horrific tragedy, this was potentially a politically motivated public assassination of a prominent conservative personality with broad appeal among young voters.

So then the rich and famous are more deserving of our attention than school children or public servants. What a great country.

No, he’s only uber famous within a very specific right wing media ecosystem. You’re forgetting how social media algorithms work. My teens never heard of him either, and they’re online and well versed in current events.

Americans are so siloed right now. I’ve been thinking about September 11, and how that was the last time we were truly united as a nation. On that day, and for several weeks afterwards, we were all Americans. We mourned the dead together. We grieved for the nation as a nation. (And yes, Bush and the Republicans did turn it to their political advantage, but that came later).

Why is the country not reacting in the same unified manner to this event? Because since then, we’ve had a couple of decades of polarizing rhetoric about which groups of Americans are “real” Americans, and who deserves rights and who does not. Because we see the way politicians and pundits are already rushing to use this as an excuse to further inflame divisions and heap blame on out-groups. Kirk was a symptom of this. He didn’t tap into a common dream. His intended audience was a very specific subset of Americans, and his reach was not as wide as some might think. I’m appalled at his murder and condemn all forms of political violence, but to recast him as some sort of modern day MLK is a stretch.

I wish adults were in charge right now who could dial down the rhetoric and appeal to our better angels. Unfortunately, there’s profit to be made in hatred, fear, and chaos.

Definitely not broad appeal. He was known for inflammatory language and stirring up conflicts on college campuses. I think someone is trying to make him something he isn’t.

The way the GOP is carrying on you would think the Almighty himself was the one who passed.

The behavior is very strange but firing up the Christian Right is the point.

Grandpa had to break the news on his favorite stories because he needed attention? Couldn’t have a FBI/local joint press conference, that would be normal.

The FBI is not confirming so the only person reckless enough to blab about rumors is our King.

He wasn’t just some youtube guy - he founded a movement. Don't go to the clueless for advice.

When you call a nonprofit a “movement“ you sound culty.

We really need to figure out why white people in America at this moment in time are so desperate for a cult savior. Is it just the pressure of not being born at the apex of society anymore? Like, they are kind of lost because they realize that being born White doesn’t award them any special powers?

White culture is in shambles and people are looking for a community. White people are not allowed to view other white people as their community in the same way that latinos or AA or Asians because racism. That leaves a void. Nature abhors a vacuum.

Anonymous wrote:I think many of you leftists have no idea why Kirk's assassination has turned into such a big deal.

Kirk was doing it "the right way" according to the left. Disagree politely, listen, give the other side space.

And he was killed because leftists didn't like what he had to say (as this thread amply shows) and they didn't want him to keep saying it.

Lots and lots of the "Democrat base" are celebrating and cheering the deliberate murder of someone who had the guts to publicly disagree with the left. "Debate this!" I see the signs being posted on college campuses, with a drawing of Kirk bleeding out from his neck.

So.

What value is there is "peace" and "restraint" when leftists murdered the most prominent guy on the right who was all about peace and restraint? And celebrate his death?

If you leftists are so glad to see Kirk killed... well, there's no possibility of peace, is there. He WAS the "peaceful solution". And leftists murdered him for it. Or at least are very happy about it.

If Kirk is not acceptable to the left.... we all know you guys would GLADLY kill the rest of us, too.

Kirk was a sort of "ambassador" to the left... and he was murdered because of it. What happens when an ambassador is killed? That's a casus belli and has been since Ghengis Khan, at the very least.

I don’t appreciate the broad generalization happening here. First off, this person probably worked alone, 75 million people and or anyone official is involved here. I have no control over what others say or do. And I think “lots” is an exaggeration. The celebrators are a minority amongst a large group of people.

It's been less than 24 hours since he was killed, and I've already seen coworkers, people just out in public - and certainly a lot of people on this very board, openly cheering that he was killed.

I think you're wrong in thinking that this is a 'small' segment of people on the left. I wasn't even looking, and saw dozens of examples of it, less than a day after he was killed.

I didn't agree with much of anything Charlie Kirk said. But first and foremost, he was a human being, with a wife and two young kids that will now grow up without a father. I'm deeply disappointed and kind of shocked by my own political party at the moment. There's some sickening stuff being said on reddit/bluesky/twitter, and it's not even been a day.

I am not seeing anyone at all cheering. I am seeing people respond to his death in the exact same way he responded to other deaths. I am seeing people quote him word for word and then being told they are sick for making such comments.

It is sick. To me, it implies they think he deserved it.

Using his own words in the same context, makes THEM sick?

The more I learn about this situation the more it makes me feel like this was a cult, and that’s a problem.

Yes, thats right.

Two wrongs dont make a right. If someone is are disgusted by his rhetoric, why are they turning around and using it themselves?

To counteract the unbalanced praise that this guy is recovering. MLB? NFL honors this guy on 9/11 but not the victims? Statue in the capitol? Insane and it forces us to counteract that insanity with reason.

Christian nationalism was a part of domestic terrorism that used to be investigated. Now it’s government funded.

Yeah, I didn’t know who he was either, but this is significant. This isn’t about gun violence, it’s much bigger than that.
