Alexandria School Board Candidates

This is why I’m voting for Ashley Simpson Baird and Bridget Westfall. They are running completely nonpartisan campaigns. School board is supposed to be nonpartisan.

I was just looking at candidate social media pages. Tammy Ignacio posted that she was endorsed by their PAC but the website has very little information.

Is Westfall still running? I've seen a couple of signs but no update on her facebook page in weeks. And her website is inactive.

Of course the VEA endorsed the two educators who just retired and Kelly Booz who works for the teachers’ union.

Alexandrians will vote for them in droves. And that's ok. One obsequious Hutchings adoring person on the SB will just replace another.

By the way, is Hutchings still saying that the schools can't open fully in the fall? I believe the word he used was impossible and I don't remember anyone on the board saying a word.

We have complete one party rule in Alexandria. That's pretty non-partisan.

And there aren't any partisans on the school board now. They & Hutchings all agree on practically everything.

Westfall's website is up. She has a full-time job and kids and did it herself. I'm her friend and she had some scary instances on social media from the public so she took a step back.

Why not just work with ActBlue like Ignacio? I'm sure they will be happy to help her too.

Bridget is a federal employee. She is running a completely nonpartisan campaign. She’s a federal employee so she has to adhere to the Hatch Act. She did her website herself. No dontuons or help from ActBlue.

Hopefully, she has some friends in B who can give her some campaign advice though. That website was a lot to get through. She seems very earnest but the word salad rivals Hutchings himself.

Bridget is very serious running for school board. Knowing her, she will pare down and edit her website. I think she was eager to get the information out there because people have a lot of misinformation about her. There was someone spreading really awful rumors about her and targeting her children. Besides Baird, I don't think the other websites are anything to rave about either. While her website is wordy, I think she is someone who probably overthinks things and takes feedback seriously.

Why hasn't PreeAnn Johnson done anything yet? Is she just relying on her name as a principal? No social media or website.

She's going to win. Why would she have to do anything?

Hutchings can do anything he wants now with almost zero criticism from the Board. Next year, there won't even be the timid, halting, voice shaking objections that pop up here and there.

Off topic (slightly) but related. Is the superintendent required to live in Alexandria?
Anonymous
Yes the superintendent is required to live in Alexandria. At one of the last board meetings Dr. Hutchings requested permission to live outside the city limits when his home had repair work. I heard from others his family was receiving threats.

I really want people to hold Dr. Hutchings accountable. Is Tammy Ignacio the person to do that? My kids are in middle school so I have no interaction with her.

Nope. She's an ACPS insider. She'll be there to replace the current yes women/Hutchings defenders - Nolan, Lorber and Anderson.

This is exactly why I'm voting for Ashley Baird Simpson and Bridgette Westfall. Our district doesn't need ACPS insiders. Not sure who else I'm going to vote for in B. Who are people voting for in A? Any hope of a write in candidate for C? I'm curious to see the enrollment data for the upcoming academic year and the return to school plan. FCPS just announced it and it was common sense. Masks in classrooms. No masks exercising, eating, or outside on the playground.

For A, I'm going to vote for ACPS parents. I think Dr. Rief and Jacinta Greene are two of the better school board members. I will probably vote for one of the ACPS current parents running. What do you know about them?
