Teachers Not Wanting to Go Back in Person

+1 Stop feeding the troll. No reasonable intelligent person thinks that return to school policies should keep schools from reopening in person until it is guaranteed that not a single person will be at risk of contracting COVID. The PP has already articulated that position and arguing serves no purpose. End of story.

It’s 18 pages now, so the answer to your question seems to be “No”.

What’s the risk of a teacher driving to school and being killed in a car accident? What’s the risk of a vaccinated teacher doing their job in person being killed by COVID?

Once adults are vaccinated, if you want your kids learning at home then pull them and homeschool. This has always been an option.

Siri messed up while I read the statement on my lab results.

Agree 100%

100% disagree.

There will be (and has been) a huge uptick in homeschooling. You should want to keep those students and families connected to the school system. Better education results. And better checks and balances for things like learning disabilities, home issues, and whatnot.

Plus, this will probably not be the only pandemic ever. Or even the only times kids might be out of school for emergency situations. It would be beneficial to already have a system in place and teachers/officials experienced with that system. There were so many complaints about how teachers didn't understand the tech or how to teach efficiently online. Not to mention the admin and how the rollout of DL was quite ... bumpy.

Please provide evidence that keeping homeschooled children "connected to the education system" yields better results. Also, "connected' does not mean "provided with daily online lessons indefinitely." If you're homeschooling your kid, it's YOUR job to provide the lessons.

Teachers are allowed to value their health more than some random kid's education. Something is wrong with a teacher if the teacher values a kid's education more than their own health. Give it a rest, angry parents. Get some therapy, develop a value system, and start to realize that it isn't all about you.

Something is wrong with a teacher if she messes up risk assessment that badly.

I agree! If a teacher isn't comfortable teaching in person despite being prioritized for vaccines, then she needs to find a different career.

The thread was mostly about long-term DL being offered once the COVID-19 risks have been greatly reduced through vaccines and low community spread. There is a point at which subjective concern about one's own health no longer raises a safe workplace issue. When that time comes, the choice is not continued DL or in person, but continued employment as a teacher or leaving the profession.

My health is much better since I don't have a commute, cook my own healthy food at home, don't have to constantly lug big files around, interact with sick co-workers, and exercise during my lunch at home. I am free to prioritize my health when called back into the office, but I am not able to demand a full paycheck and continued employment if my employer doesn't agree.

+1. We’ve fully vaccinated the teachers around here and the excuses to going back to work are getting ridiculous. It’s time for the teachers to do their job properly or get fired. Why do only the US teachers feel the mental health decline in millions of kids is a better price to pay than the potential of a fullly vaccinated teacher maybe getting some sniffles? Maybe the teachers need a value system where it isn’t all about them.

Then who will teach the children? Places are desperate for teachers, look on the careers page for the counties. They are trying to lure back retired teachers. All these flippant remarks that teachers should just quit or be fired are so ridiculous.
