It seems like every day, we get a new article saying "I'm usually pro-union, but I've had it with teachers' unions." Here's today's, written by an epidemiologist who's on the front lines of the pandemic:

+1 We are debating leaving too. We can't take the WTU's antics anymore. I never thought I'd utter these words, but we just want to live somewhere where our kids are allowed to go to school. |

Meanwhile schools in New York City have been open for months and it's been NBD.

Not only that, they are bringing back graduating high school classes this week. My brother is a teacher in Berlin and just went back in person. Not to mention that Germany has had fully open schools all fall and can therefore afford to close for a limited amount of time. They'll be back full-time for all while we'll still be doing DL and fighting over hybrid spots. (And of course, Germany would never so such an inequitable thing as offering IPL spots by lottery, excluding part of the kids. It's either DL for all or IPL for all.) |
That's awesome for your kids, but they are an exception. |
I'm seeing that, but isn't that because most of you go to non-title 1 schools? One child go to an NE school and I've found when I've made a helpful suggestion to the teacher they've listened or sent out a survey to all the families in the class to gauge what everyone else needs too. The other a NW school....and well...let's say I've had to make A LOT of complaints to admin. The teacher was always missing my child's sessions or cancelling over and over. I'm starting to see a pattern in this thread where teachers in NW schools are horrible online, makes me wonder if in person was really all that great. Or it just seems that way because we donate so much for them to have more resources. |
I am not saying it is a problem of the teachers doing a poor job. Ours (upper NW school) is doing fine. But it is still much harder for the kids to follow while staring at a screen, and school is about so much more than transmitting content. Kids should be learning with their peers in a classroom. DL is just an inherently poor substitute for real school. This is the expert consensus by now, and I shouldn't have to spell it out for anyone anymore. |
+1. My children’s teachers are thoughtful, kind, energetic, and responsive. And my children hate DL. For us, DL — not the teachers — is definitely the problem. |
Yes but there are still DL experiences that are better than others. |
No, you shouldn't have to spell it out. I feel like my kids, in 3rd and 5th grades, learn more during two days in hybrid, and finds more happiness/inspiration, than all week via DL. I wouldn't have had my head around the poor substitute issue in March, or even in Sept. By February, the limitations of DL for the age group are writ large for all of us in this house. |
I have a sample size of 1, but my kid's NW PK4 teacher is phenomenal with online teaching. |
A low blow deserves a low blow. |
My PK4 student has learned how to read this year. IPL isn't perfect, but she is learning. Her teacher is not taking naps during the work day. |
My favorite meeting this year: Dad demanded a meeting with teachers, school admin and a central office rep. Brought articles on schools opening in Europe and wonder why...WHY our school can't open. Yelling, moaning. Finally, threatens to buy a 2nd home so his children can go to a school in Vermont. Without blinking an eye, the central office representative provided steps to unenroll and to make sure to do so immediately. Our schools waitlist is ridiculous. His child's spot was filled the day after the father submitted the forms. All of the parents who LOVE urban education, ADORE raising a city kid, CLAIM diversity is SOOOO important: The world will continue to spin without you. This is a rough year but DCPS and other urban school districts will prevail- with or without you. So go. Go back to Ohio or Indiana or wherever you are originally from. Go back to your hometowns. Do whats best for you and your child but you can leave with some grace. |
Were you in the meeting or did you just hear about it? |
