No teacher is ever going to make such an announcement. Ever.

~HGC teacher

Is it HGC or CES teacher?

For the current batch of 5th graders, it was called HGC when they started in 4th grade, then it was changed to CES this year in 5th grade. Kids and teachers haven't mentally made the switch yet, I think.

I find this whole thread amusing. The sky is falling because my child with fantastic test scores and perfect grades did not get in. I still haven't heard if my child got in, and even if she did, I'm not sure she will go. It would be a collective decision. The reality is that her assigned middle school is not a big step down. It is not a disaster.

I thought DC was doing great breaking into the 160s in MAP-M, but DC said a number of classmates were scoring in the 180s! IF this is true (which I doubt), the only argument that makes some sense is that these kids all have some of the best middle schools in the county in Bethesda and Potomac, and will have each other as peers. I believe all of these schools, unlike the ESs, offer enriched instruction. However, it seems more likely that there are Cold Spring parents fearing the worst but who haven't heard yet.

I didn't believe it either but there are kids with really high scores. I would not be surprised by 180's by a few kids. Likely most are in the 150's or so.

Goodness, I don't see anyone on here saying it is a disaster or that the sky is falling. We're sharing results and saying that some kids are disappointed, which is a totally natural way to feel about something you wanted and won't get the opportunity to be included in. Glad to hear you're not concerned with such silly things!

My DD did not want to go, but she did want to get an offer. Which I thought was interesting, for a 10 year old, psychologically!

Are the kids really disappointed or are the parents? I think it is the latter in most instances. The complaints for why their child was rejected runs from affirmative action to the incompetence of how the program is administered. The reality is there are a limited number of seats and a lot of strong candidates. Most kids are going to be rejected. As one poster said, it is a good life lesson.

Recognizing that it's probably a mixed bag, my kid is actually super disappointed. We have a good middle school and most of her friends are going there and we haven't personally talked about the program at all. She's a smart kid and very driven, but I don't think she's "gifted" in the sense that her middle school won't be fine for her, and I didn't think there was a nice of a shot.

With the testing this year, the kids got all spun up about it and my daughter and her friends were all super excited about the possibility and just fed off of each other about it. So of course, now that theyre all getting not accepted letters, they're bummed. It is what it is, but yes, they're disappointed.

Whoever asked about the mail today, yes we got our letter today. It's a big 8.5x11 envelope.

My son came home from his HGC today and said that five kids haven't heard, and the entire rest of class got rejected. All excellent scores, grades, etc.
