I am not a trump fan.. but I am a Veteran. I do understand what he is trying to say.

Realistically, the president needs someone to speak for him.. he is just not articulate at all. Poor interpersonal and vocabulary skills.

Asked whether the White House had a recording of Trump's call with the widow, Myeshia Johnson, Sanders said it didn't.

Wilson claimed in interviews that Trump crassly told Johnson on the call that her husband, Sgt. La David T. Johnson, “knew what he signed up for.” Wilson also said the widow was dismayed that Trump didn't even seem to know Johnson's name. David Johnson's mother confirmed the account to The Washington Post, but Trump disputes it.

While declining to talk about the specifics of their conversation, Sanders assured that it was “completely respectful, very sympathetic” and that Trump “expressed .?.?. condolences.” She also appeared to confirm at least one claim Wilson had made, saying, “Just because the president says ‘your guy’ doesn’t mean he doesn’t know his name.”

Sanders cited the presence of chief of staff John Kelly when asked for proof that Trump did not tell the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson that "he knew what he signed up for."

“No," she said when asked if there is a recording. "But there were several people in the room from the administration on the call," including Kelly, she said.

Sanders later added that Kelly, whose son was killed in acton in 2010, supported the president's comments.

"Gen. Kelly was present for the call and thought it was completely appropriate. He thought the call was respectful and he thought that the president did the best job he could under those circumstances to offer condolences on the part of the country," she said.

Gen Kelly must be hating his decision to join this clown car.

CNN had an interview with Whitney Hunter widow of Army Sgt. Jonathan Hunter who tragically died in August. She repeatedly said that she did not want to criticize the President but she did tell CNN that she was told to stay by her phone for several days because the President would call her with his condolences but he never called. She said that although she had not expected the call in the first place, being told it would happen and for it to then not happen made her feel like her husband's life had been taken for granted.
I wish I could say this, the $25,000 fake offer to another family and the insensitive call to Sgt. La David Johnson's widow where he did not even say his name surprises me but it does not. I think he should either have a script or have one of his staff write a personal letter of condolence from now on.
These Gold Star families have been through enough they do not deserve to become a political football

You forgot the part about knowing the cost of his decisions. Phone calls to widows of soldiers are meant to covey that.

The message he’s sent to the troops and their families: I guess you know what you signed up for.

I don't believe Kelly thought the comments were completely appropriate or respectful unless he says it personally on the record. Sanders could say whatever she wants, but I don't believe her one bit. She's a mouthpiece for a known liar.
