Recent suicides at Langley HS?

If they want to have a debate over whether FCPS should start later, cap the number of AP courses students can take and do more to mix up the demographics at Langley, fine. Do it in another thread, but don't claim, for example, that these boys had "no one to turn to" just because you want to bash a school that most kids are very proud to attend.

I hoped to find some modicum of comfort here and some mild speculation and debate is expected. But the self-serving posters have strong-armed their way to the majority on this thread. Bully for you. For the rest of us in the Langley community, our kids will grieve together tonight on the court and field. I'm sure I'll see many many of you and hundreds others in the back or balcony at MBC tomorrow. Just so sad. Rest in peace T. We loved you.

Thank you. Perhaps the AP debaters could spinoff?

A memorial service will be held for TS tomorrow, Saturday, February 8 at 2pm in the Smith Center Auditorium with a reception immediately following in Community Room C. www.mcleanbible.org Park on the lower level of the parking garage nearest door #2B

Jim Hutchens, a long-time family friend and former pastor, will be leading the service. In lieu of flowers the family wishes for donations to be made to The Josh Anderson Foundation which provides teenagers with mental health education www.joshafoundation.org

I'm not 100% positive but I do not think either of these boy had any AP classes. Stop all the AP talk on this thread.

Were these two boys friends of each other's? I read that these two very tragic losses were not connected, that is so hard to understand.

The suicides were unrelated in the police report sense. But this is interesting:
Anonymous wrote: In addition, suicide is "contagious"--it is a recognized phenomenon that the risk of suicide in a group increases significantly after someone commits suicide, especially for teens. That is why teen suicides often aren't widely publicized. (For that matter, it is also why metro suicides aren't usually identified as such.) Some here are calling for more discussion and openness about the topic; the reality is that that approach can backfire.

Teen suicide is a very complicated phenomenon. We want to wrap it up in tidy package, with a neat explanation, but the reality is very different.

My heart goes out to the poor parents of these boys. There will be no real peace for them, ever.

What do you suggest? Nothing?

Today I just want to celebrate T's life on his 18th birthday.
I'll gladly participate in the AP discussion on another thread. It has nothing to do with TS and I won't discuss it here.

Anonymous wrote:What info do want? Suicide is one of those things that in most cases only makes sense to the person who committed suicide. Depression is a terrible illness. Knowing the boys and their families I can tell you that they were both popular good kids from good homes who unfortunately had troubles that overwhelmed them. One of the boys was a football star. I watched him play many times and he had the kind of talent that any player dreams of having. There was no bullying or anything like that. It's just incredibly sad for their families and their many friends. RIP TS and AL.

+1. We knew T well and he was loved at school and home, and was kind and caring and funny and had a beautiful smile. We heard similar things about A tonight. Depression is terrible.
Rest in peace boys.

This makes me so sad, and worry about my own teen.

Same here. I want to learn more about what causes it so that we can learn how to prevent it. So sad for the families.

If you know anything about what fierce rivals Langley and McLean are, this will make you tear up pretty quickly (yellow and green are the Langley colors, red in the McLean color):
