Recent suicides at Langley HS?

My kids don't go there but have seen reports on social media about two deaths this week. So very sad if true. Does anyone know if these reports are correct?

Police have not concluded these are suicides yet. They are treating them as homicides until detectives have finished the investigations and are satisfied that they are indeed suicides. Counsellors will be available tomorrow at Langley for students who wish to talk. Students will be wearing black.

Bullying is often only one factor. Mental illness aka depression is also often present. It is often a combination of factors that brings someone to the point of suicide. One thing or two things they can cope with but as the stressors pile up, it starts to feel hopeless.

They may have been on drugs as well

Did you seriously feel there was a need to post such hearsay and speculation????

Someone's baby is gone. Some mother's heart has been torn out. A family will never be the same.

And yet you find it appropriate to repeat some sort of mean spirited accusation about these kids?

Shame on you.

Sorry but the previous poster added speculation as to mental illness and I added another probability.

Either way the combination of bullying, mental health problem and drug abuse is a terrible combination.

Mental illness would be seen more as something inborn, not within the students' control, but drug use would be something that they had done wrong, something illegal. Granted there can be a link between the two.

How about instead of rubbernecking and gossiping, we take this opportunity to learn about teen suicide, and what can be done to prevent it.

http://www.sptsusa.org/teens/
"Suicidal thoughts or feelings can make us feel frightened and overwhelmed. We can feel crazy or worried we're going crazy and may be embarrassed to share what we're thinking with others. Or maybe we've tried to talk about it and were dismissed ("Come on, you don't really feel that way!"), or made fun of ("There you go again, you wimpy cry-baby!"), or not taken seriously ("You're always talking about that- one of these days maybe you'll do it"). Perhaps the people we talked to didn't know what to say so they just ignored us and said nothing.

Just because we couldn't find someone who listened in a helpful way, though, doesn't mean we should give up! Talking about suicidal thoughts and feelings—with the right person—can make all the difference in the world."

"Is your teen at risk of suicide? While no teen is immune, there are factors that can make some adolescents more vulnerable than others. Understand how to tell if your teen might be suicidal and where to turn for help and treatment."

http://www.speakingofsuicide.com/2013/05/29/parents-and-teens/
Teenagers often tell me that they do not like to talk with their parents about their suicidal thoughts. Some teens do not tell their parents at all. There are many reasons why teens lock parents out. The biggest reason that teens give me for not talking to their parents about their suicidal thoughts is a conviction that their parents will “freak out."

The teenage years can be an extremely stressful and challenging time for adolescents and their families. The Division of Psychiatry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center created Surviving the Teens® to provide information, resources and support to help guide teens and families through the ups and downs they might face.

https://www.apa.org/research/action/suicide.aspx
"One in five teenagers in the U.S. seriously considers suicide annually, according to data collected by the CDC. In 2003, 8 percent of adolescents attempted suicide, representing approximately 1 million teenagers, of whom nearly 300,000 receive medical attention for their attempt; and approximately 1,700 teenagers died by suicide each year."

Why is suicide becoming more common a response to bullying? Why does it seem like a more viable option to the bullied students? I know there have always been suicides but it seems the frequency due to bullying is increasing. Maybe I'm wring and we're just hearing more about it because of the Internet and social media?
