Recent suicides at Langley HS?

Thank you for providing a space for those girls to grieve together. Peace

Very sad.

The reasons for suicide are rarely simple and straightforward. I talked to 2 Langley seniors and neither indicated that bullying was an issue, at least with one of the boys (they didn't know the other one). The issues seemed complex -- depression, drugs, dropping out, dealing with parents -- but that is just a couple of people's views. I hope the police and school try to understand the many factors that probably went in to both boys' decisions so that they can learn and change how they address students with these issues.

FCPS definitely has a bad rep for removing kids from the social network and making it nearly impossible to return to school. I hope that didn't happen in these cases, but we should know whether it did or not.

Sorry, didn't finish. It probably wasn't SES because kids at Langley are either rich or richer. The real issues there are a tremendous amount of academic pressure and an apathetic administration and staff. Morale is quite low

There is no person, school, or community to blame here. These kids were raised well and in a loving community and tremendous school. Their issues are not something we can nor should try to understand on social media so prematurely. For now all we can do is pray for their families and honor their deaths.

I know there have always been suicides but it seems the frequency due to bullying is increasing. Maybe I'm wring and we're just hearing more about it because of the Internet and social media?

My thoughts exactly.

The reality is, parents nowadays are too busy trying to make money (hard economic times, demanding jobs etc) and have less time to spend with their kids. Teenage years are hard enough as it is, and parents not having time to spend with their kids makes it even more difficult. So if a child is facing mental issues, depression, drug abuse the likelihood is that parents don't even know.

Sad times.

I also have a Langley senior who said there is no indication of bullying in either case. People should really stop putting these things out there on DCUM, especially if they have no idea of the details.

I hear you on this; twitter feeds suggest otherwise though and I don't know why.

Twitter does not restrict access, and there are many kids from other schools all over the county sending out messages of support, which is more than you can say for some DCUM posters. Some of those other students have assumed bullying was involved.

I didn't grow up here. While I was in middle school, there were a number of suicides of high school kids. It was an epidemic. Unfortunately, suicide seems to be contagious, so the PTB decided that the best solution was to stop talking about it. There was no more coverage in the paper. They held no school rallies to discuss suicide prevention. Things evened out, and during my time in high school, there were no suicides (several deaths in cars, alcohol related). My prayers for the high school students at Langley.

Frankly I don't think speculation on DCUM forum is damaging to anyone anywhere. It's a public Internet board not a court of law or a medical facility.

Right, not damaging to the families of these two boys. Not at all. You sound like a real jackass with zero empathy.

Boys are at a much, MUCH higher risk in succeeding at taking their own lives. The rates blow away the rates for girls.

My thoughts and prayers are with those families. Very sad.

Why in the world would a family who just lost a child head for DCUM? Maybe it's your social/news source, but not for others. Sheesh. Calm down.

I knew one of the kids. Really, nice boy, but sounds like he had been battling some things in recent times. RIP to both kids and prayers to their loved ones. What an awful story.

My son is a senior at Langley and friends with both, very close to one. The boys suffered from depression and were recently having a tough time. Very sad.

My family recently lost a loved one tragically and any number of people were only too happy to share verbally what was being posted on social media. If you're not kind on the Internet, you're not kind period.
