Why would tourists travel to the USA knowing they are subject to immediate harassment and detention based on their social media profiles. Nope. I’m taking bets that the 250th anniversary events will also be a bust. Deranged Donnie touched both events, and everyone knows that ETTD.

World Cups gave been held in many locations that were globally unpopular due to poor leadership at the time but yet the love of sport and nationality prevails in modern times. Same could be said for the Olympics. Remember Sochi? Russian hotels were booked.

I remember Sochi. What I do not remember is Putin threatening potential travelers with their state police and the confiscation and search of their telephones and laptops for the travelers' possible jailing. What I don't recall is Putin threatening the athletes to think twice before coming to the US and trying to get the Olympic Committee to ban their participation, as Trump has threatened Iranian athletes. And I would bet in the polymarket that you, too, do not remember such threats.

Idk what P said, but I would never travel to Russia. They love to lock people up for little to no reason. Yes, I realize the US now does the same.

The headline doesn't do this train wreck justice. It's not just that hotel bookings are below projections, they're below a run of the mill summer season.

I couldn't even tell you who played in this year's super bowl. Or any other year.

I could not name you one professional athlete still playing. Maybe the guy who is dating Taylor Swift, and only because his (seemingly very nice) mom was on the Traitors for like 5 minutes.

I think this event might be in my state because I keep seeing discussion of Europeans thinking they can just walk across the I-95 highway to the stadium but otherwise I could not tell you one thing about international football.

The point is that even authoritarian countries clean up their act for foreigners when they host elite sporting events. Trump doesn't seem to understand that. That is why foreigners are reluctant to travel to the US - even for the World Cup.

The other hosts (Russia, Qatar) went out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Fans did not feel like their personal safety was at risk. As a foreigner who has had to deal with CBP in the Trump era, I do not feel safe crossing the border into the US.

+1 even China was better than Trump's "Murica in terms of welcoming travelers.

It’s not hard to tell that people here don’t travel to Russia and China.

People here are appalled that any such comparison is being made, but here we are.

Trump being our president in a year we're hosting World Cup matches all over our continent is unfortunate and embarrassing but the World Cup will go on as scheduled and stadiums will be full of spectators. They've sold 80% of the ticket inventory which is indeed a little behind the pace of sales in previous World Cups but the exorbitant ticket prices are the obvious primary reason for this. Ticket prices are anywhere from 100% to 500% more expensive than they were in 2022. Unsold tickets will either be sold at their current prices or prices will drop before the tournament to meet demand but in either case, seats will be filled.

I don't doubt that Trump's authoritarian stances towards foreigners from many countries is a deterrent to some and that is indeed shameful but seats will inevitably be filled with a higher percentage of host country citizens due to ticket prices and travel costs that simply aren't affordable to many foreigners who may have trekked across the globe to attend previous World Cups. There aren't many people in less wealthy countries who are willing and able to spend 10k to 20k to come to North America to attend a handful of matches but those football lovers will passionately watch the tournament from afar without regard for the awful American leader.

That puts you in the minority of global residents.

if seats are filled with Americans, that is a total fail. The economic point of the world cup is to have hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors dining and staying in hotels and otherwise pumping tourism dollars into the economy of the host country. NONE of that is happening now.

I have never been to Russia, but I did do a girls' trip to China about eight years ago. What do you want to know?

Are these sold tickets, tickets purchased on bulk to be sold by scappers at a serious markup?

I wish that I could say that I'm boycotting the World Cup on moral grounds but I can't.

I'm boycotting the World Cup because it's way too expensive.

I have a family member who's very involved in Olympics coverage and has been for decades that took a hiatus to avoid all the work trips to Sochi. Which makes sense to me, but now we're contrasting people avoiding a sh*th*le to avoiding a supposed tourism destination like the US. It took a concerted effort to make that happen in a years time.

“The blue circles appeared weeks ago, then the purple blocks suddenly showed up a day or two ago, and the red blocks seem to have appeared recently too.

That's not what ordinary fan or even commercial scalper resale looks like who resell pairs, fours, and scattered seats. Instead, this looks like inventory being dumped in bulk onto secondary markets, at prices below FIFA's official site.”
