Northwestern is a tough one for NCS. They’re big on gpa. They admit a lot of TO students with high gpa’s. NCS students tend to be the opposite.

I’m a new poster on this thread. Two different friends are telling me their daughter’s colleges were not sent the first semester grades and new better gpa in time and they missed the deadline for EA or ED 2 time frame.

Michigan comes out today and NCS sent transcripts today. Classes ended January 10th. NCS should have gotten report cards and transcripts out as soon as possible for those SENIORS not yet accepted anywhere.

Last year 4 girls at NCS matriculated to Michigan and more were accepted but did not attend. Second semester grades were available later than this year.

The lack of 1st semester grades wasn’t an issue.

This is the most unhelpful reply I have yet to see. Maybe those applicants were not having a significant increase in their GPA like many of the current seniors are.

DP. A signifiant increase in one semester isn't even mathematically possible! Let's say you ended 11th grade with a 3.5 and get a 4.0 this first semester. Your GPA is now 3.57. Not exactly needle moving. And the impact of a 4.0 is even less if you started with higher than a 3.5.
I don't mean to argue but I really
think you need to relax.

I am looking at the transcript and my kid’s GPA went up to another higher range from for example a C+ to a B. Complete grade change.

Different school but you are completely wrong.

Transcript went from B+ to an A- which makes a huge difference for the schools we are applying to. For ED for example entered a lower GPA. For RD entering the higher GPA would put my kid in the target range.

This line of thinking makes no sense. It's not like a college has a "target range" for admission where all the GPAs above in this range get admitted. I can only think that maybe you're talking about a 9-11th GPA that is low enough that it's automatically discarded by the college of interest (?) and now you're above that number? But if that's whats being talked about here then now congrats! you're just in the conversation. You went from "auto deny" to "probably denied like everyone else who had a high enough GPA to be considered to still not being the one chosen."

It's not like you cross some magical GPA threshold and suddenly you're in. I wish it was (that would sure be easier!)

Have you never looked at your school’s data? I can see that at a few schools we are interested in yes for certain all applicants above a certain GPA from MY SONS school not all schools but from HIS school we’re yes indeed accepted with a certain GPA.

Do the rest of the Big3 schools have less grade deflation than NCS? Because they regularly send kids to Northwestern.

No, they overinflate grades. What percentage of students in your graduating class had a 3.7 or above?

Whether you call it overinflation at Sidwell/STA/Maret/GDS or deflation at NCS, the former appear to have kids accepted to Northwestern and the later does not, despite many applying. The same could be said for USC, Vanderbilt, Hopkins and probably more.

NCS is sending only girls; the others are co-ed or all boys. At many schools (especially with certain majors) definitely advantage to boys. Just tougher for girls in general.

Irrelevant to this year and to individual students counting on the new better grades to help their applications.

Let me guess your kid got into their top 3 choice school and now you are trying to make others feel bad for being concerned?

No, my oldest was Class of '24, and it all worked out. Take a deep breath, everyone isn't out to get you. I hope your daughter gets the acceptance she desires.

What about the girls being admitted from other schools especially to Northwestern?

Why does only one school seem to matter to you? Four girls at NCS are going to Cornell next year, 2 to Chicago, 1 to Harvard, 1 to Princeton, 1 to Yale, 1 to Duke and many to SLACs among other competitive schools. 40% of the class is placed and it's only January 24th. These are strong results and lots more good news to come.

DP. You are very annoying I must say. My daughter did not even apply to Northwestern and I have no idea who did but apparently that poster is disappointed in their outcome. Are you saying they have no right to their feelings? What is your crusade here?

Great results for them but you realize 60% are left and many of those remaining 60% have not been accepted to any school that they would be excited to attend so there is that...Stop focusing on the 40% that are in and have some compassion.

If no 4.0s, assuming all are submitting tests and they are high scores, are these girls with strong results in the 3.8 range? 3.6+ range?

Lol. No. You're not getting near those schools with a 3.6 from NCS. They Ivies this poster mentioned are all strongly hooked except for the Yale, 2 Cornells, and the Harvard. Those girls had top rigor and a 3.9 (basically the top of the class).
Admissions are horrendous outside of the ones this poster keeps posting (the 7 Ivies and Duke). My daughter has been deferred and deferred. I don't know what is going on. There are like 40 girls who are just getting deferred to ANY school in the top35. Unless something changes drastically in RD this will be the year the sh$%t hit the fan with this school and their 3.5 average.

EA colleges never want senior year fall semester grades (the turn around is too tight for kids from ANY school). NCS grades came out Jan 17th so they just had this week to submit. It doesn't make any sense that this week would be too late for ED2. FCPS (for example) doesn't have fall semester grades available until early February.

You have no idea what you are talking about. No one cares about FCPS.

DP.

Some privates send in transcripts weeks ago for first semester and girls are going up against those girls. NCS is missing any advantage. They sent transcripts today and Michigan is being announced today.

Child, you're a mess. Get your act together and stop blaming others.

Doesn’t this freak out at NCS happen every year though? Seems like it all works out in the end
