Another day, another school shooting

Our right to bear arms isn’t just for community safety. It’s to protect the citizens from a tyrannical government. We do not want to be the next Venezuela.

Actually, Venezuela isn't looking as bad right now, tbh.

I mean if a bunch of little kids getting shot at Sandy Hook did nothing, what is it going to take?

It also got twisted into a story that it was fake, promoted by Alex Jones and others, which many people bellieved!

I’m from Chicago where Illinois has some of the most strict gun laws. We are pretty high in the ranks for gun violence.

Banning rifles won’t do anything when most gun violence and shootings are done by a pistol.

Criminals will always find a way to get guns, regardless if it’s legal. Look at all the felons committing mass shootings ( a mass shooting is 3 or more people shot) with illegal guns.

What we need to do is look into social media ties and mental illness. Why is it that gun ownership was prevalent before 2010 and we didn’t hear of any mass shootings as a normal occurrence. Social media has been on a drain on our society for years. All these mentally ill kids trying to become famous.

We can guns and we will took into the next London. They are having a huge epidemic of knifing deaths and attacks.

While we are at it, let’s ban cars too. They kill way more people and have been used by certain extremists to mow people down in mass events.

Taking the right to bear arms against a tyrannical government is not the answer. The answer is properly treating the mentally ill and doing away with social media.

And most of the guns used in crimes were purchased in the neighboring states with more relaxed gun laws. People tend to leave that part out when they use Chicago as an example of how gun laws don't work. How many are coming from Indiana???

That's fiction democrats have dreamed up to rationalize bad behavior. No, the shootings in inner-cities are mostly gang, drug and turf related. Many are repeat offenders. Regardless of what you think, guns don't shoot by themselves.

+1.

The biggest issue is democrats talk about guns but are so misinformed on every point that they aren’t taken seriously. Most democrats, as evidence on here, can’t even tell you the distinction between weapons. How can you take that person seriously when they are so misinformed and frankly stupid when it comes to any gun knowledge? You can’t.

I don't think having an AR15 in the house with kids is "good parenting", so, I'd be willing for the government to enforce that type of good parenting.

I never said they did. I said the guns aren't coming from Illinois. A large percentage of them come from Indiana.

No they don’t. It’s only about 16% of guns.

Me too.

I mean, any good parent would have removed ALL guns from the house, including an AR 15, after the 14 year old was investigated by the FBI.

Most of the mass school shootings don't happen in urban areas. They happen in the burbs.

Epidemic of bullying. These kids are always bullied and they have parents who do nothing to help them.

This cannot be wholly attributed to bullying. Most of these shooters have messed up home lives, life long mental illness, and usually a history of violence.

False. Most of the guns are illegal with felons who can’t own a gun.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/2023/2/4/23585066/atf-gun-trafficking-justice-department-time-to-crime-chicago
Key points:
"In Chicago, most of the traced guns, about 16,500 of them, were bought from somewhere within Illinois, with about 8,200 more coming from Indiana. Wisconsin, Kentucky and Mississippi each was the source of fewer than 2,000 guns.

By contrast, few guns recovered in crimes in New York were originally purchased there. The biggest sources for those guns were Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia.

Brandon del Pozo, a Brown University researcher, notes that New York and the states that surround it all have stringent gun laws.

The “iron pipeline” — the route criminals must travel to buy guns easily — is extremely long for New Yorkers, who often go to Southern states to obtain them, del Pozo says.

“In Chicago, you are never more than a few hours away to get a gun or go to a place with lax laws regarding guns,” he says.

The ATF gun report was the result of the agency’s first comprehensive study of criminal gun-trafficking in two decades, according to the Justice Department.

Among the national issues the report highlighted, theft is a significant way that guns get into criminals’ hands. From 2017 to 2021, more than one million guns were stolen from private owners across the country, the report said."

I didn't think I needed to have a PhD in guns in order to convince you that mass shooting of school kids (and toddlers) should not be enabled.

You don't need to know the distinction between guns to suggest common sense gun laws. It seems like the gun nuts love to use this to deflect from the actual issue. Fine. You win. You're smarter than all of us about the different kinds of guns. Now that we have that out of the way, please explain why we should have red flag laws, safe storage laws, etc.

Some posters are just babbling word salad because they can't explain why they object to common gun safety measures that 90% of the population thinks is a good idea. It's the NRA with the blood on their hands (and their staff, many of whom live in our DMV area).

Wut? Guns were stolen? Criminals would never do that. They would never use them in a gun-free zone, either.

There are red lines that criminals can't cross.

In what way did any of what I said translate to government interfering? None. I didn’t say the government needs to be involved.

I said parents need to parent. Too many kids have no discipline and way too much freedom. The parents need to start monitoring their minor kids’s access to social media. They need to start monitoring their kids social media accounts, phone, and limiting access to certain platforms.

It’s not just guns. Kids are doing illegal criminal challenges for TikTok. All for views. They had assaulting a teacher, stealing, and shooting people with water guns to name a few.

Parents need to start taking a more active role in their kid’s lives. I don’t care that they are teens. The lack of discipline is one of the main reasons kid’s are out of control.
