Additionally, they need more than just the speakers who come in periodically. They need people to teach them the numerous day to day responsibilities of the principalship.

Isn't that what happens during the principal internships?

In theory yes, but not all principal developers know how to train others. If they did, and if the evaluation process was accurate, there wouldn't be the large number of supposedly "principal ready" administrators that so many are worried and posting about.

We're just not able to get staff development quite right in this school district.

This is interesting to me. What specific skills do principals need that they’re not currently trained in?

The administrators I see now versus the ones from 20 years ago seemed ill prepared to take on the role. It's a huge responsibility and so many moving parts to juggle and many of the new hires are going to flame out

Given how many vacancies they have, I'd have to imagine there will be some.

hahahaha, teachers don't even learn up to date classroom management techniques in their elementary education BS programs. What makes you think admin learn that in their programs? They get the basics of those above categories, if they're even covered at all, and are forced to pick up those above skills later.

Lots of theory is covered in graduate programs. Principals need training in practicalities and translating theory into action.
