Republicans, when elected, are not afraid to use the authority granted to them, fully and swiftly. That's what appeals to many. These voters know that the 2-3 things they care about (taxes, security etc) will be taken care of. They did not mind aligning with the far right out of convenience. Not sure where many of these voters stand today as they tend to be extremely transactional and a country that is slipping backward will threaten their prosperity and security.

Yes but this post is about Republican friends not Republican politicians.

We need to keep talking.

In real life there are many of us.

I know many Md Dems who really like Governor Hogan and would even consider voting for him as president.

At DC’s school even mix of Rs and Ds and no one talks about that. We all care about DC’s education and the school community though.

I think if you feel this strongly about half of the country, you should consider how insular your life in the DMV is. I grew up in a small town and had to listen to these rants about Democrats my whole life. “They all want to kill babies. They think the government should parent their kids. Blah blah.” I hate hearing these kinds of mischaracterizations. Turn off MSNBC and focus less on politics for your health and the health of our country.

That is what I assumed also until I got to know them. They are fun and thoughtful. They are very responsible gun owners - everything locked up and all their family including daughters were required to do gun safety training. They support women in the family being the main bread winners and pursuing advanced education. We are a multiracial family and they were extra kind to family members of color.

They are modifying their stances also and more tolerant of more liberal positions now. That happens when you maintain communication channels and mutual respect.

On the other hand, some liberal social media influencers we know are not winning over many people in middle America by dressing and acting like drunk, stoned strippers and holding up signs telling the SC to go F?ck itself.

Most people are way more complex than D and R labels. We need to keep talking to each other.

So you are comparing real people you know to social media influencers and you find out you like the real people more?
That's going to happen whether you are talking about politics or fashion.

Liberals who try to convince us that any Republican is a nice person are just as worthless as Trump supporters.

This country is done. I’m just here to make sure the people who destroyed it get to hear how bad they suck while it happens.

1/3 of the country and you should re-consider how you assume people who are sick of the treachery, misogyny, racism and sedition of the GOP are in a bubble. OP isn’t basing her opinions off baseless rants her parents made, she’s basing it off what her friends believe and what actual policies she has seen the GOP enact.

And in fact if we’re going to effectively tell others to check their privileged bubbles, you would do well to do more of it as you’re pretty clearly still bubbled in the right wing world, based on your last sentence.

I'm giving it until 2025. Because if Rs take over after the 2024 elections, this country as we know it is over. And this isn't just me freaking out - the signs are all there. They have been doing all their treachery out in plain sight with idiots cheering it on. And they make it harder and harder for the actual majority to have a say, taking away their power bit by bit.

I will fight until then. But when the idiots win and fascism really takes hold, I'm out and taking my girls with me. The pandemic has taught me we clearly aren't all in this together in this country anyway, and the only people I can care about and protect in the end are my immediate family. I can only take so much before I feel the danger is too great and we need to think about our own safety.
