Sorry - there's no easy solution short of removing most guns from Americans' hands, and that's not happening. Any other "solution" can be too easily defeated.

Can't get a gun into a building? Plenty of opportunity before school, after school, or recess/PE. Or call in a bomb threat and the kids to come out to you.

Slightly off-topic, but this attitude is why Dems are going to get slaughtered in mid-terms.

Whenever moderate people bring up a topic or perspective that does not align with the party-line, it gets dismissed as a non-issue, or as a plant by Russian trolls, or a red-herring from Republicans.

I'm telling you; there is a HUGE contingent of voters that care more about things like school closures, inflation, children safety, protecting Title IX, etc than the rest of the social-media liberal trends.

But the minute we voice it, its gets dismissed outright by the party gate-keepers.

Saying goodbye to women's rights (they want women home raising children - abortion is already about to go, next is birth control)

Probably because they did a terrible job with covid, worse than Trump and what he did was terrible, all the violence, inflation, etc...none of the politicians care about people, just votes.

Exactly, but having basic security in the schools is better than nothing. And, it doesn't have to be a gun. They can use so many other weapons too. MCPS cannot do gun control. What MCPS can do is increase security.

If the county is really serious about putting police officers in schools they should be required to have training specifically for this.

They are required to have special training which focuses on de-escalation, disability awareness, implicit bias, and contributing to a positive student environment. These factors are also considered during the selection process, including a thorough review of the officer’s record.

What this debate really comes down to is whether people trust policing as a whole. Some posters see the value in having police at schools since schools are experiencing similar crimes as the greater community. Others hate officers in general and think their very presence is offensive. The county has already decided to put officers back in a redefined role (community engagement officers), which increases training and oversight:

Most cops never fire their gun in their careers against a criminal. The focus on the SRO having a gun is a distraction issue. Properly trained SROs are very valuable in schools. That is why most want them back. The purpose is to deter crime and violence.
