I have an SRO at my school…only one person…but I support someone being armed in my building
What do you expect them to do with a pistol v high capacity assault rifle?
It only takes on good shot to kill someone.
Or one bad to miss and hit a child, which is the most likely outcome.
What is your solution? MCPS cannot do a state, county or federal gun ban so that's not even an option. You don't want police, security, SRO's or metal detectors so there is nothing that MCPS can do given nothing will please you. I'd like several armed police at every school.
Let's just put fully armed national guardsmen in schools.
That is not what the guardian do, that’s what police do. What is your real life solution that can be implemented?
Sorry - there's no easy solution short of removing most guns from Americans' hands, and that's not happening. Any other "solution" can be too easily defeated. Can't get a gun into a building? Plenty of opportunity before school, after school, or recess/PE. Or call in a bomb threat and the kids to come out to you.
Exactly, but having basic security in the schools is better than nothing. And, it doesn't have to be a gun. They can use so many other weapons too. MCPS cannot do gun control. What MCPS can do is increase security.
If the county is really serious about putting police officers in schools they should be required to have training specifically for this.
They are required to have special training which focuses on de-escalation, disability awareness, implicit bias, and contributing to a positive student environment. These factors are also considered during the selection process, including a thorough review of the officer’s record. What this debate really comes down to is whether people trust policing as a whole. Some posters see the value in having police at schools since schools are experiencing similar crimes as the greater community. Others hate officers in general and think their very presence is offensive. The county has already decided to put officers back in a redefined role (community engagement officers), which increases training and oversight: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/departments/security-new/220426-MCPS-Police-MOU-CEO.pdf
