+1000. Here, here. I'm the ex-military PP. I'm with you 1000%.

If we ban firearms, how do we ensure the bad guys turn theirs in?

You can require a license to buy ammo or the components to pack your own. Also there are ways to identify and track purchases of bullets after they have been fired.

Here we go again with a C word - "can." I think you meant "ought to." Because it's not happening. The sooner people get realistic and pragmatic, the sooner school boards across America can start making plans, and following them through with completed action, to keep kids safe. Like: Plan - metal detectors. Budget, find contractor, install. That simple. Rather than whining and wishing and nothing getting accomplished and kids dying.

Of course, because a metal detector is definitely enough to stop a psycho that shows up at a school with a weapon of war. 🙄🙄🙄

The magical thinking, the complete lack of common sense and logic, this is such an American phenomenon.

Metal detectors do work. How many mass shootings happen in airports or courts? Don't play coy. They absolutely do work.

The issue is that you'd need millions, literally, at every intersection and inside homes.
Because most deaths occur in the home, as accidents or suicides.

Stop with the metal detector argument. You're not going to save a lot of lives that way.

The ONLY way to save the most lives is to ban guns.

This has been researched extensively and all experts are in agreement.

I'm talking about stopping school shootings. Schools have millions of desks, doors, windows, steps, locks, teachers. Can have metal detectors quite readily.

You, by contrast, are lumping the school shootings issue with the issue of eliminating all guns everywhere. It's conflating 2 things.

I went for a walk..and came upon children playing and thought surely there can’t be anything more beautiful. And then I heard this news. Such a tragedy. Im also a mom.. so I understand that pang of heartache at random moments..seeing how beautiful they are or when I can’t meet their needs…I cant imagine what the victims’ families are going through..just…why does it have to be this way..

18 children and 3 adults? Is that correct so far?

This man was Latino.

Latino is not a race. Hispanic is actually considered "white".

Backbends to try to make this person a white redneck Come ON. Does this type of statement console the families? No.

This. A lot of white supremacists actually consider Latinos white. Keep in mind that Argentina harbored my nazis after WWII.

From our Argentine family to you - F you.

It’s true.

Stop anti-Argentine bigotry.

U.S. had Nazis here. We also have KKK. So. . . does that make us all Nazi KKK white supremacists? No. Your whole bit trashing Argentines is merda
\

Yes the US paid for Nazi scientists and their families to live here and protected them.

Waiting for others to confirm but yes, according to some reports.

Just ghastly. May God have mercy on those families.

Yeah I have no problem saying we have a major white supremacy problem in the US. Why are you so defensive?

I just told you, the vast majority of courthouses in America DO NOT HAVE METAL DETECTORS at entrances. There have been numerous courthouse shootings in America. Educate yourself.

HOW WILL WE PAY FOR METAL DETECTORS AND THE MULTIPLE OFFICERS REQUIRED TO STAFF THEM AT THOUSANDS OF SCHOOLS ACROSS THE USA?! Put up or shut up.

Death count rises to 18 kids. Where are Republican politicians' Thoughts-n-Prayers?

Most counties and cities place bond or whatever referendums on ballots to finance improvements to schools or other large school expenditures. They would not need to be staffed, although an officer at each school would be even better. These size of expenditures are run of the mill. Nothing extraordinary at all.

I'm sorry you hold false beliefs that a metal detector does not deter gun carrying.

You really do not understand how the real world works do you? You think it is a great idea to line up unscreened individual at the airport. Next time you are in line look at the people around you. They could have a gun or bomb. Do you remember the Afghanistan airport? How did that work out?

Now take that down to an elementary school level. What do you think the level of readiness will be? If someone walks up and pulls out a gun, they will kill the school security very easily. Those soldiers in Afghanistan were on high alert, armed with military weapons and armor. You will not get that at a school. Plus everyone in the security line is a target. Unless you have a weapons drawn the shooter has the element of surprise. You also have to think about how much you are paying security. Not everyone will sell their life to protect others when the shooting starts.

What is happening to young people today?

We gave them guns and ignored their mental health.

"NBC News: Senator Murphy spoke to reporters as he walked off the Senate floor, saying, "spare me the bullshit about mental illness. We don't have any more mental illness than any other country in the world.""

What a lovely human. Voters should be ashamed.

He's right.

Studies have shown, time and time again, that the problem is gun control. Every other wealthy nation tightly controls its guns and as a result, has a much lower firearm death rate.

Ban all guns now.

Agreed. Also, the same people who bleat about mental illness after shootings don't do a damn thing to address mental illness, so who cares what they say? They don't fund more research on it. They don't direct funds to increase access to care. They're just too craven to admit the real problem.
