But you do believe in greatness of Russian people i.e. their superiority as a nation and their right to dominate all (lesser) nations around them? Every Russian I know holds that belief. It is revolting and always comes through, no matter how hard they try to hide it.

That sounds exactly like what most Americans think as well.

Lol, Americans don’t even come close to that level.

- Manifest Destiny
- Subjugation of Indigenous Peoples and Africans
- “Spreading democracy” during the Cold War
- “Nation-building” in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

Some of our unofficial mottos: “Shining city on a hill”; the President as “the leader of the free world”

The US is 100% like that.

This thread is about a Ukrainian friend and a Russian friend. Stay on topic.

Or start another thread to discuss your issues. This poster wants to discuss the relationship with her Ukrainian friend. I don't think her blabbing on to her friend about, but but but america this or america that, will help that relationship in any way whatsoever and would probably destroy it further.

Exactly, because that's what my Russian friend does when I try to explain why that particular worldview is wrong.

This person doesn’t seem to understand that the Russian Empire and the USSR existed and were classic imperialist creations.

What’s your point? I never said Russia isn’t like that. I said the USA is as well.

Why go so far back in history? What Russia is doing right now in Belarus, Ukraine etc. is run of the mill colonialism

Well sure. So then why is this person talking only about “internal colonialism”? Such ignorance.

Anonymous wrote:Would this xenophobia be acceptable if China invaded Taiwan? A lot of WASPs around here seem to relish the opportunity to discriminate against non Aryan looking white people. I guess since it’s not socially acceptable to be bigoted against Blacks, Asians and Hispanics they need a healthy release valve for all their pent up bigotry and are taking it out on Slavs.

I think if China threatened to nuke us, people would be a lot more xenophobic towards Chinese people. It's understandable.

Don’t you think we can rise above xenophobia?

No. We recently elected a president whose main campaign promise was to build a border wall. So, no.

Well, you specifically could perhaps rise above it.

Unless they're outspoken in their opposition towards Putin, I will always view Russians with suspicion. That's just how it is now.

So how does that work? If you meet a Russian-American, they have to introduce themselves as follows: “Hi, I’m Aleksey and I hate Putin”? And if they don’t, you’re suspicious?

German citizens had to deal with this after World War II. There are many other examples in history. It's not like it's a new concept. It takes about 20 years after the cessation of hostilities for memories to start to fade. Germany post WW2 was accelerated by the Cold War.

Did we flagellate American citizens of German descent during the WW2? Did we request that those who left before Hitler came to power must atone for his sins? And you are telling OP now that she will be an old lady by the time she is "forgiven" and her kids will have to face "deserved" adversity of some sort for most of their formative years? I have no idea what's wrong with your brain, you need to grow up or see a therapist if you are indeed an adult

Is this a joke?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_of_German_Americans

Can you read and comprehend, or you aren't old enough?

Where does it say that ALL Germans had been subjected to this type of discrimination? Read the paragraph, it was mainly German NATIONALs, meaning those who have active German citizenship and cases were individual. Not saying that this was ok, it was very very wrong, but apparently you are in favor of sending ALL Americans who used to live in Russia or former USSR (including Ukraine, ironically) into internment camps? Not going to happen. Deal.

"During WWII, the United States detained at least 11,000 ethnic Germans, overwhelmingly German nationals.[3] The government examined the cases of German nationals individually, and detained relatively few in internment camps run by the Department of Justice, as related to its responsibilities under the Alien Enemies Act. To a much lesser extent, some ethnic German US citizens were classified as suspect after due process and also detained. Similarly, a small proportion of Italian nationals and Italian Americans were interned in relation to their total population in the US. The United States had allowed immigrants from both Germany and Italy to become naturalized citizens, which many had done by then"

So... just makes the point that this is another target of wokeness, another "white guilt" . Same shit, but different victim/oppressor, in this case, ironically both look the same and sound the same and have the same sounding last names and accents, so nobody will tell the difference here.

^^^ Right wingers are so deranged that they'll excuse the murderers of innocent civilians and children because apparently not killing people means you're "woke" now.
