When should DC drop its school mask mandate?

I propose a requirement for individuals 65+ to wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status would save more lives and prevent more hospitalizations. Individuals 65+ who are vaccinated are at higher risk than unvaccinated children.

I have seen stats to indicate that vaccinated people in their 40s are still at higher risk of Covid complications than UNvaccinated 3 or 4 year olds.

So even with the vaccine mandate, most people frequenting bars and restaurants right now are at higher risk from Covid than these little kids wearing masks from dawn til dusk every day at school.

What a joke.

Yes. And that's not to mention community spread. Does anyone actually think masking a 3 year old has any effect whatsoever on transmission? Unvaxxed adults visiting crowded indoor spaces, on the other hand....

I’m OK dropping the mask mandate but you may want to check out her other views before you get all excited…

Haha. Agree with the above. And, also, many of those kids weren't wearing masks anyway. So... that's a dumb tweet.

I recently realized how much my elementary kids hate wearing masks. My husband and I don’t complain about it and hadn’t heard them really complain, until they unloaded about how they hate not seeing their friends’ whole faces, hate not being able to talk when they eat with the masks off, how unfair it is that some school staff/aftercare providers take off their masks to talk to each other but kids can’t, why did they even get the shot anyway because it didn’t change anything. Since the PreK kids can’t get vaccinated yet and cases are still high, I’m holding back for now, but Im ready for our elected leaders to give us a plan for winding down masks in school.

+1

I teach HS and while I don’t really hear kids verbally complain, the second many are out of the classroom they rip the mask off their faces and don’t put it back on until they absolutely must. That doesn’t seem like something people don’t mind wearing.

I don't know who the Tweeter is, but her "other views" have no bearing on the reaction of these kids. Unless she made them fake it, which is of course entirely possible, but which does not mean that most kids wouldn't actually be glad to ditch their masks (once they get over the anxiety their parents have instilled in them).

If you want anything to change, you HAVE to email the folks in charge. The mayor, deputy mayor for education, Chancellor, your councilperson and Dr. Laquandra Nesbitt. I did and received a response. State explicitly that you cannot vote for any elected official who continues to uphold a mask mandate for vaccinated DCPS students.

The more we flood their inboxes, the more they will realize that parents in the district actually care about this issue. They assume that because we are mostly Democrats, we support this COVID theater. Just send a quick email!

I just sent my note and I plan on sending one every day. This latest posture (allowing unmasked, unvaccinated adults free access to public spaces while masking fully vaccinated teenagers) is just absurd and I'm furious. This is the tipping point.

Teenager, and elementary school students, who also have access to vaccines! If it needs to be tied to vaccination rates, they should allow this to be handled on a school-by-school basis. Some schools are nearly 100% vaccinated, and they shouldn't have to keep masking because others aren't.

As a soon to be DC resident: thanks to all current residents for writing to your elected officials about this. Total outrage.

We are nothing more than the “Help”.

Democrats and Republicans are lifting their mandates in their states. DC isn’t one, but Bowser will if she wants to get re-elected.
