SATC New Season - And Just Like That...

Which is honestly weird because Sara Ramirez has a history as an extremely charismatic, versatile actor, so there is no reason that with the right material they could be believable as a successful stand up comic. But for some reason Che is written in the most generically obnoxious way and their delivery of every "joke" is exactly the same sarcastic eyeroll, and I don't think I've ever heard the character said anything that made me smile or chuckle to myself. It's depressing! If you want me to buy that Miranda fell for Che because they are so charismatic and funny and interesting, then why not write a charismatic, funny, interesting character? Che's whole schtick seems to be "I'm nonbinary, and some people don't like it, and those people suck." No wonder the pilot failed.

And the hard thing about Miranda's storyline for me is that right now she seems to have no agency whatsoever in her life. She is getting dragged around by Che, she's afraid to speak to Steve like two adults who have known each other for 20 years and need to just sort out their issues so they can both move on, she is obnoxiously fawning over Brady, she's even annoying sycophantic towards Nya. Maybe I could deal with the upheaval in her personal life if we ever saw her asserting herself at Columbia, but mostly we just see her looking awkward about being a non-traditional student. She doesn't seem invigorated or excited about it -- she seems ambivalent and disinterested (like deciding to turn down that great opportunity to follow Che to LA? What the hell?).

Years ago I wanted to name my DD Miranda but chose not to specifically because I knew people would assume she was named after this character and that was not the reason at all. And then for a time I regretted it because I still love the name and the show had faded into the past a bit. But watching this show now, I am SO GLAD I trusted my gut instinct because I cringe in every scene Miranda is in and I would hate to be reminded of my lovely daughter's name every time I did. Ugh.

Good point. And what's up with the Columbia thing anyway? She dropped out to follow Che and now she's suddenly back in the program? How does that work?? (And the fact that she ditched that program is one of the big reasons I hate this whole storyline of hers.)

I think she's just auditing classes at Columbia so it wouldn't really matter if she was away for a while. At least that's what I am thinking, just to have it make some sense.

PP is SO right that they have never once shown Che as actually funny and charismatic, they've just told us that Che is funny and charismatic. The standup thing was painfully unfunny. I guess at least they are acknowledging that the TV show based on Che isn't funny and is turning people off - I'm glad they aren't insisting that it's great.

Um, no. I love that show but no. Absolutely not.

Please. They s show is so horrible and unrealistic of what and how these age ladies act. Golden girls was more realistic.

Not really! Golden Girls was super aspirational. I don't think there's that many groups of unrelated older women living together under one roof where everyone is financially stable, healthy, cheerful and friendly, great looking, dating like crazy, etc. If there is sign me up please.

They are mad that Kim leaked the cameo? Hahaha, the only reason I am watching this train wreck is because I know Kim’s cameo is coming up.

When did Miranda become a bumbling fool?

I think over the course of two decades while stagnating at home in a relationship that was comfortable but not right - and then going on a sort of rumspringa with Che, who is a disaster for Miranda but is also unleashing something in her that feels (to her) authentic and necessary. I think the problem is that usually we understand the powerful attraction that a character has to another character, but they've written Che so weirdly that none of us can imagine feeling that way about them. So it makes Miranda seem crazy, not just like someone who's bursting into something new in later midlife.

I continue to think that Miranda's midlife crisis can be narratively exciting, while we see her make mistakes and also find the person she believes herself to be at this stage of her life. It's just hinging so much of it on an unappealing character that makes this story hard for any of us to get with, I think.

This is bang on. I will only add that I am also struggling to see what Che sees in Miranda.

Feel that they dropped this little factiod to make Miranda not look as insane, but honestly it just paints the "I Wish They All Could Be California Girls" announcement in a more ridiculous light. This is not a 46 year old!!!!

Eh, I wonder if they are trying to make Che unlikeable?

Comedians are often broken people. Ditto for actors.

Feel like they were trying to make it seem like they aren't that far off in age in reality although Che comes off as so immature. So its not like Miranda robbed the cradle. I have no idea how old Sara R is, but would easily believe late twenties on physical appearance.

Ramirez is 46 or 47.

Ramirez is 46 or 47.

Ramirez played Dr. Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy for 10 years and that character left the show in 2016.

Cool. She looks like she could be late 20s. For people who didn't watch Grey's Anatomy, I am not sure how they would have known Che was in her mid-forties from what we have seen.

I acknowledge and admire the specificity in this comment!!

I don't want to post any spoilers, but developments in the show seem very self aware of how awful and performative the Che character is, and I wonder if they are divesting.

If you’ve never seen the early seasons of Grey’s do you really belong on this forum?

Did anyone catch Che saying they couldn’t afford that apartment if the pilot didn’t get picked up? Please do not let Miranda move in there with them.

Yeah that’s insanely dumb.

At some point Che should run out of money and Miranda has given up her job and apartment so they have to move back in with Steve. That would be humbling.
