Metropolitan DC Local Politics

I had a good chuckle at this one, from this guy in the Post. “A 4,000-pound machine driven repeatedly at reckless speed by someone who has shown that they will not stop is absolutely no different from someone with an AK-47,” Karthik Balasubramanian of the group D.C. Families for Safe Streets said at a recent public hearing. “If there was such a person who was roaming the District with an AK-47 randomly shooting … we would mobilize all available resources to separate that person from their weapon and let them get the help that they need. Why are we not doing the same with the dangerous drivers who are abusing their own weapons?” |

It's ridiculous how political everything is these days. We should have safe bike lanes in DC. Somehow Amsterdam and Copenhagen manage it. And the bicycle as the preferred method of transportation comes with all sorts of benefits.
But the ATV and motorcycle gangs belong in jail. Dangerous awful men. It shouldn't be an either/or. |
WTF? Are you completely nuts? She is the CM for the area where this crash occurred. Do you think she should just ignore it because a car was involved? |
I don’t understand what is driving your mirth. Does the incident that is the subject of this thread - which almost everyone posting here seems outraged about and which many are outraged that others are not publicly expressing their outrage - not prove his point? Or should we shrug our shoulders that a kid was nearly killed because it was an “accident”? |
The car haters liken a speeding drivers to someone shooting up the city with an automatic weapon, which is obviously super ridiculous. But when children are run over by people on ATVs, they say absolutely nothing. It shows how hypocritical the bike lobby is. They only care about safety to the extent it furthers their political agenda. |
You are being very obtuse. The person who quoted said nothing about the general class of “speeding drivers”. Reckless speed and running stop signs / red lights is extremely dangerous, which is why police take a very dim view of such driving in almost every jurisdiction that is not DC. The person you quoted is not a member of the “bike lobby”, whatever that is. They represent a group that promotes road safety for all users. And the quote is from a public hearing on DDOT. Has the same person appeared at any such hearings since the incident occurred? Why do you need other people to lay all this out for you? |
I suspect that there is something to this, but it’s a dumb strategy. People see how some drivers behave on city streets and wouldn’t dream of bicycling amongst them. Wider adoption of bicycling will only happen once it is safer to do so. |
