Does my 18 year old son need to register for the draft or face consequences?

Y'all are we really complaining about this?

First of all, service is MANDATORY in most developed nations around the world. It's not a draft, you MUST serve.

Plenty of us have loved ones that volunteered so yours only has to sign up for the draft. Call yourself thankful and move on.

Did an 18 year old boy post the question?

And those boys must have interesting parents to not understand long-standing requirements.

Do those 18-year-old boys have parents when they’re 17 and 364 days old who might be able to guide them, perhaps?

Lots of boys do not have parents. Lots of boys don’t have involved parents. Lots of boys have parents who are not American citizens and didn’t have to do that.

Your Bubble is very small

I agree with you for the most part, but i am a naturalized citizen and this was one of the citizenship test questions. Most immigrants would know this perhaps even better than the native born Americans.

I understand that in the 1940s when the rule was made that women weren't allowed to serve in combat roles, but now that restriction has been removed. Women serve in combat roles now and are thriving. So why haven't the rules changed to include females over the age of 18? It seems odd to continue to only "draft" males.

No one should be forced to register. Male or female.

You get a card in the mail letting you know that it's time to register. I'm sure they miss some people, but if you're in a public high school or have a driver's license you'll almost certainly get a letter.

What a ridiculous answer. Most boys do have parents. And most boys have parents who are American citizens. But even if they aren’t American citizens, is the implication that they are therefore ignorant. That’s a pretty rude attitude and I completely disagree. My immigrant neighbors are 100% aware of their son’s obligations as a US citizen.

In VA, you can't get a driver's license unless you check the box letting them enter you into the draft. Which I thought was pretty smart.

I don't know if this is common in other states.

They just re-introduced the mandatory draft into the German military!

But many already have a driver’s license at 18. So does that mean they won’t be able to renew it if they don’t register and that’s when they get the reminder if they don’t do it on time?

How did you not know this. Mine will register at 18. He cannot ever be medically qualified so it doesn’t matter.

Didn’t all of your husbands register at 18 years old?

I made sure mine did though he forgot he did. He told me later he figured he hadn't. We are not a military family but live in a heavy military area. DS knew we have been unhappy with the military recruiter presence at our HS.

Why are you unhappy with a recruiter at a high school?

Yes. Failing to register carries criminal charges. While I doubt that it gets prosecuted much, you don't want to give this administration something real to charge you with if they decide they don't like you for whatever reason.
