Does my 18 year old son need to register for the draft or face consequences?

Anonymous
My DS turned 18 one month ago. He said he heard at school that he needed to register for the draft 30 days after turning adult since he is male. This is the first I've heard of this. Is this legit? Has anyone not done this? Are there any consequences if you don't do this or delay doing this?

Yes he does and yes there are consequences but mostly they would involve requiring him to register at that (later) point. For example if he’s applying for a job with clearance I believe they inquire if he has registered.

Yes, male U.S. citizens and most male immigrants are required to register with the Selective Service System between ages 18–25. The window technically starts within 30 days of turning 18 (before or after), so he’s right on schedule.

But… registering ≠ getting drafted.
- Many people forget… until it bites them later (like FAFSA or some job applications.)

The good news is that it takes about two minutes online to do.

Yes; registration is required for males.

We haven’t had mandatory conscription since Vietnam.

It is required. Govt job applications will ask this question. Not sure about private sectors.

I am surprised so many people don't know about the draft. My son recently turned 18 and registered. A couple of his friends' moms called me asking about it. Maybe I am familiar because I had brothers so there were many conversations in my household about the draft. My father and his age group were Draft age during the Vietnam War and I heard stories about how they were fortunate not to be drafted.

When male students applied for college financial aid, loans, scholarships and filled out the FAFSA, they were also required to sign up for the Selective Service System. It was easy to do and included in the application. If a male didn't register they didn't get aid.

However, as a part of the 2020 FAFSA Simplification Act, a student’s eligibility to receive college aid is no longer tied to their registration status with the Selective Service. So there is no more automatic registration with the FAFSA.

Many States have automatic registration for the Draft when males get drivers licenses.

Here is the info about the Draft

District of Colombia:

Driver’s License Linked to Registration? Yes, MAY register when applying for a license, permit, or identification card
Registration Linked to Access to Higher Education? No.
Registration Required for State Employment? No.

Maryland

Driver’s License Linked to Registration? Passed legislation but never implemented because it was conditioned on the receipt of special federal funding.
Registration Linked to Access to Higher Education? No.
Registration Required for State Employment? No.

Virginia

Driver’s License Linked to Registration? Yes, must be registered to receive license, permit, or identification card.
Registration Linked to Access to Higher Education? Yes, must be registered to receive state financial aid.
Registration Required for State Employment? Yes, must be registered for state employment.

HB 669 (2002) requires that every eligible male under the age of 26 who applies for a learner’s permit, driver’s license, or identification card be registered with the SSS. The application “shall indicate either (i) that he is already registered with the Selective Service or (ii) that he authorizes the Department to forward to the SSS the personal information necessary for such registration.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it returned at the rate that Trump is starting conflicts around the world. It’s not like Trump has any kids who would be in danger of being drafted.

Trump might have grandkids eligible. But they can just follow Trump's lead and pretend to have a condition that excepts them like Trump's bone spurs.

He'll probably claim "bone spurs" too!

Trump will fix that.

Let him know there is no "draft" and yes, he has to register with the selective service.

Let me know if you(or he) have any more questions while I'm here.

It’s odd that you never heard of this. It started so long ago, any male born in 1960 or later has had to register.

If Trump continues with his reign of terror they will start looking at the youngest on the list. Maybe set up voluntary training centers in high schools to start then it starts.
