Does my 18 year old son need to register for the draft or face consequences?

You get a card in the mail letting you know that it's time to register. I'm sure they miss some people, but if you're in a public high school or have a driver's license you'll almost certainly get a letter.

Lots of boys do not have parents. Lots of boys don’t have involved parents. Lots of boys have parents who are not American citizens and didn’t have to do that.

What a ridiculous answer. Most boys do have parents. And most boys have parents who are American citizens. But even if they aren’t American citizens, is the implication that they are therefore ignorant. That’s a pretty rude attitude and I completely disagree. My immigrant neighbors are 100% aware of their son’s obligations as a US citizen.

In VA, you can't get a driver's license unless you check the box letting them enter you into the draft. Which I thought was pretty smart.

I don't know if this is common in other states.

But many already have a driver’s license at 18. So does that mean they won’t be able to renew it if they don’t register and that’s when they get the reminder if they don’t do it on time?

How did you not know this. Mine will register at 18. He cannot ever be medically qualified so it doesn’t matter.

I made sure mine did though he forgot he did. He told me later he figured he hadn't. We are not a military family but live in a heavy military area. DS knew we have been unhappy with the military recruiter presence at our HS.

Yes. Failing to register carries criminal charges. While I doubt that it gets prosecuted much, you don't want to give this administration something real to charge you with if they decide they don't like you for whatever reason.

You are "unhappy" with a military presence at "our" HS? WTH does that mean? And how is it possibly any of your business if other kids are interested in the military?

Everyone will need to have a Real ID. You can be issued a State ID if you don’t drive.
