Anyone else's parents/in-laws drink like fish?

Anonymous
I think they drink more because as older folks with any number of achy limbs and chronic pain, it helps dull things.

My grandparents drank nightly, but my boomer parents have slowed down as they’ve aged. I think they are trying to lose weight, and don’t want the extra calories. They certainly used to party when they were younger though.

In fact, we don’t judge it at all. Who gives a shit? People who judge whole generations and people who drink just suck.

Boomers have no business judging anyone for anything!

You're just jealous of our wealth. But our kids and grandkids aren't because we happily share it with them.

You can’t have fun without drinking alcohol? Alcohol is required for fun? Hmmm. -NP

Alcohol has been associated with fun in most cultures for thousands of years. Don’t act like it is weird.

But now we know so much more about its negative side… like how it causes cancer!

Cave men beat their children and married their sisters, and lived to be 31 - “been doing it for thousands of years” isn’t much of an argument.

Stop attending those vacays if your in-laws' drinking habits are an issue for you.

Like most boomers they’ll throw a hissy fit tantrum if everything doesn’t revolve around them.

There is also strong evidence for its health benefits and its social benefits. People who drink in moderation tend to be significantly healthier and happier than non-drinkers.

You sound sanctimonious and awful. There’s a reason nobody can stand you people.

No. That’s a myth. There’s no health upside to drinking. It causes cancer.

There was never any “strong” evidence. There was a series of studies funded by the alcohol industry that suggested it could be healthy for your heart or whatever… those studies have mostly been debunked. Before Trump came in, the govt was moving towards warning labels like cigarettes have: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/03/health/alcohol-surgeon-general-warning.html

I know it’s fun and a lot of people are addicted but it’s getting harder and harder to pretend any of this is a good idea.

Partners parents are in their 70-80s and drink a ton. I don’t know how they do it because I’m only in my early 40s and max out at 2 drinks! They are not exactly pleasant drunks either….

I said that about a friend to another mutual friend “how does he do it? I just can’t keep up and he does that every night!” And mutual friend turned to me with a mildly astonished look and said “well he’s an alcoholic” and it’s absolutely true.

“Why does everyone hate me and my generation? Could it be we’re horrible and loathsome to everyone? Ah I don’t give a shit what they think!”

Stop hijacking the thread with your boomer comments.

As long as they aren't ugly drunks, observing your parents get inebriated with their friends and tell stories can be entertaining.
