Anyone else's parents/in-laws drink like fish?

I'm on vacation with my DH's family and the wine just flows. My MIL repeats herself and gets teary and on and on. Their friends drop in for a cocktail and stay for dinner. I swear it's like a geriatric frat house!! I mean good for them, they earned it, but I'm also like, good lord people I can't keep up and you're 75!!

You’re judging people just trying to have fun on their vacation? Maybe spend the evening self-reflecting and tomorrow you can join them. Be sure to leave the stick in the bedroom.

Yes I hate going on vacation with my in-laws because they are wasted most of the trip. It is not fun being around them as I am not much of a drinker. They are overly emotional and think it's funny to insult everyone. I am over it.

My observation is that the older generation drinks more than mine (Gen X) does. My in-laws, who are no longer living, drank every single evening and would drink at lunch on weekends and holidays. My parents (late 70s) drink quite a bit and seem to have friends and neighbors drop by almost daily for drinks. Meanwhile, most of friends and I have slowed down a lot and don’t drink much at all in a day to day basis.

Yes. I’ve become a bigger drinker because my in-laws are such a big part of our lives. Every day is a party. It’s tiresome.

Yes my father in law is alcoholic and I find him disgusting. Mother in law covers/lies for him.

You can’t have fun without drinking alcohol? Alcohol is required for fun? Hmmm. -NP

Alcohol has been associated with fun in most cultures for thousands of years. Don’t act like it is weird.

I've found this to be true as well.

I can't relate to this. My mom never drank - it interfered with medication she took, so at most she'd take a sip of my dad's wine. My dad will drink but he only buys alcohol when company is coming, and like when I was young, he will still decide he's not going to finish a bottle that was opened during a dinner party and pour it down the sink.

Yes! My mother didn't drink at all when we were growing up and now kills at least a bottle of wine a day on vacation. It's a lot!

Wait, this kind of sounds fun.

My mom NEVER drank growing up, she’s 66 and recently retired. The last few family trips I have been shocked at her intake. She puts everyone else to shame with her ‘tequila lunch’. I think she’s just bored and happy to be socializing.

I drink more on vacation than at home, 100%.
