UVA earns an “F” over antisemitism (ADL)

-Three things grouped together: Level of hostile anti-Zionist student government activity, Level of hostile anti-Zionist student groups, Level of hostile anti-Zionist staff and faculty activity. They don't say how they documented this.

And yet...
The University has a close relationship with Hillel and the Jewish Leadership Advisory Board, meeting frequently with representatives from these groups. The University Safety & Security department has also hosted an antisemitism training day that was attended by 120+ employees from departments such as DEI and Student Affairs.

The unfortunate reality is that the ADL is bordering on supremacist views

The South is the most anti-Semitic (and racist for other races, non-Christian religions) yet the admin has you believe it’s a NE elite issue.

You are kidding, right? The NE schools have been largely horrible since Oct. 7 with professors cheering and blatant anti-semitism. Schools in the south (Vanderbilt, SEC) have not seen this type of behavior - small if any protests and if anything pro-Israel. Jewish students have not been harassed (and yes there is a noticeable Jewish presence at these schools) and Jewish spaces (Chabad) not vandalized and Jewish signs (eg, Happy Sukhot) not decimated with some FP slogan or worse. Southern schools have been a relief from the anti-semitism in the NE.

Your kid must go to Dartmouth. Agree, they handled it well. The rest not so much.

Yea, they’re a “different” group alright. And not exactly an unbiased one.

Is FIRE biased? They’ve been doing this since the height of cancel culture. Well before this administration.

This article is from April, 2024. Well before Trump.

The ADL has zero credibiliity. It is a pro-Israel lobby devoted to repression of free speech and thought in America. I don't understand how any Jewish person thinks this is good for Jews.

Did the tiki torch march resulting in a death and Trump’s " fine people on both sides" remark happen at UVA?

Yep. Most people who are life long Virginians know UVA doesn't have a reputation for tolerance.

“Roughly 45% of schools received a D or F grade. It appears initially that the ADL negatively graded many institutions for acts of constitutionally-protected speech, protest, or student-led referenda. The University of Virginia was founded on the principles of free expression and student self-governance, and we will continue to honor those values, even as we continue to fully condemn antisemitism and all forms of bigotry and to support members of our community in this challenging time. We can certainly always improve, but we strongly disagree with the subjective conclusions presented in this scorecard.”

Yup. I’m Jewish and have not viewed the ADL as a credible organization for a long time.

PP can you say more about this? Several DMV schools have done the ADL's No Place for Hate program in recent years. Should schools be thinking twice about signing up for this?

ADL is more about promoting the actions of the State of Israel by any available means. Saying anything contrary to this mission is "defamation".

Agree. ADL is no longer a trustworthy organization.

Remind me again. Why did the Proud Boys and the like go there?

Because they were taking down Confederate statues. Charlottesville didn't march on itself. Hate groups marched on them.

NP. It's complicated. The ADL and SPLC both remain very good resources on white supremacist groups/symbols, and I've never heard anything about No Place for Hate that would make me concerned.

On the other hand, ADL takes such an expansionist view of antisemitism as to almost strip the word of meaning, and also constantly obfuscates the legitimate difference between antisemitism and anti-government-of-Israel's-actions.

Moreover, their leadership has been cheering the detention of legal US residents who have been involved in pro-Palestinian advocacy. Not riots, not protests, just noting that Palestinians are human beings who are suffering. So, they are aligning themselves with folks like Stephen Miller for short-term "gain" but also throwing away some of the most important tenets of Judaism to do it. Moreover, I truly worry that collaborating with fascists is going to backfire on the ADL and on the Jewish American community more generally.

I find it fascinating that non-Jews (and likely people who have zero interaction with Jews) are more concerned about this than actual Jews.

I am Jewish. Most Jews I know think Trump should just stfu. By allegedly trying to help Jews he is just making things worse. I don’t need his help.

Trump and Fox completely control the narrative and all of their ignorant followers just repeat it and have lost all ability to critically think for themselves. They are worshipping a false God. I learned in Hebrew school that this is violating a commandment. I wish all of their phony pious evangelists would snap out of it and realize the same thing.

I'm the PP you responded to. Thanks for this explanation.
