Is FIRE biased? They’ve been doing this since the height of cancel culture. Well before this administration.

They seem to have a history of fighting against school censorship and for protecting free speech on campus across a wide ranging spectrum (not necessarily protecting one type of viewpoint). Also, interestingly, FIRE rated UVa #1 for free speech last year.

Yup. I’m Jewish and have not viewed the ADL as a credible organization for a long time.

PP can you say more about this? Several DMV schools have done the ADL's No Place for Hate program in recent years. Should schools be thinking twice about signing up for this?

NP. It's complicated. The ADL and SPLC both remain very good resources on white supremacist groups/symbols, and I've never heard anything about No Place for Hate that would make me concerned.

On the other hand, ADL takes such an expansionist view of antisemitism as to almost strip the word of meaning, and also constantly obfuscates the legitimate difference between antisemitism and anti-government-of-Israel's-actions.

Moreover, their leadership has been cheering the detention of legal US residents who have been involved in pro-Palestinian advocacy. Not riots, not protests, just noting that Palestinians are human beings who are suffering. So, they are aligning themselves with folks like Stephen Miller for short-term "gain" but also throwing away some of the most important tenets of Judaism to do it. Moreover, I truly worry that collaborating with fascists is going to backfire on the ADL and on the Jewish American community more generally.

I’m the PP who originally said ADL isn’t credible, and this is the part that is so obvious and frightening and infuriating.

I am quite happy with the ADL work on calling out discrimination, hate, racism, etc. It is just 1 framework to use, and It's good to share information and open up dialogue. For those who critique any adl bias, I hope you are also calling out the Qatari funded programs in k-12 and on college campuses. I hope you are also examining the donor funding behind the chair positions in social sciences. There is much to learn and discuss as we learn about levels of federal funding and foreign funding. Even harvard's president acknowledged the lack of ideological diversity on his campus. I think this information is helpful.

It's not included in the antizi- I mean antisemitism ratings of obvious reasons. ADL is first and foremost an Isr- I mean Jewish organization, so of course they will focus on their own issues first. If you want report cards for anti-black racism, maybe ask the NAACP or BLM.

You are kidding, right? The NE schools have been largely horrible since Oct. 7 with professors cheering and blatant anti-semitism. Schools in the south (Vanderbilt, SEC) have not seen this type of behavior - small if any protests and if anything pro-Israel. Jewish students have not been harassed (and yes there is a noticeable Jewish presence at these schools) and Jewish spaces (Chabad) not vandalized and Jewish signs (eg, Happy Sukhot) not decimated with some FP slogan or worse. Southern schools have been a relief from the anti-semitism in the NE.

Most Jewish families live in the Northeast. Same with Catholics. There are no problems for the most part. This is about genocide. The Harvard report showed no incidents of Jews getting hurt, just skirmishes at protests. This is the first time in history that Israel is committing a genocide in the most sadistic way possible. Crushing people under buildings and purposely starving children to death all while making plans on how to use the Gaza Strip for themselves.

They aren’t used to the mainstream harsh criticism and protests demanding they stop killing civilians. They came up with a plan to call protesters pro Hamas and antisemitic to shut it down.
