Sobriety trend gaining steam? Noticed all last week…

People who still "party" (drink heavily) past their 20s run the.risk of becoming like the whole crew in the Karen Read case, including her. All of them so drunk no one is clear on how someone died or they're lying. They're truly wasted.

I love cocktails and wine, but I only drink when I'm out, which isn't that often. I usually don't drink at home, unless it's a special occasion. I've always done this- even in college. It's a good balance for me. I don't understand mocktails and NA beer though. I usually try not to drink my calories.

And then we lost our tolerance for alcohol and I had a horrible hangover from a half glass of wine. We have old friends who started turning everything into an heavy drinking event and all of their new friends were really similar, and life started to feel like those times in college when I was sick and couldn’t go out and had to find patience for my very drunk friends who thought they were hilarious. They all started to go away on weekend drinking trips and it wasn’t our scene so we grew apart. I know they think we are unsophisticated and boring, and that makes me feel a little embarrassed.

Then a friend’s sibling sent someone to the ICU after causing a terrible car accident when they drove after 2 drinks.

For me that was the end of enjoying drinking. It just started to seem pointless. I probably drink 2x/year and only if I see a really interesting cocktail on the menu that I’ve never experienced before.

What do you mean by “weekend drinking trips”? These are DINKs, parents or retirees?

The parents we know who booze the most are travel sports parents. And country club parents. But those are largely the same parents.

NA beers all taste flat to me, as if they lack a certain effervescence. I don’t see the point - especially when a restaurant wants $6 per can. Rather just have plain still or sparkling water.

Our Sec. of Defense is a drunk.

People who drink are weird / MAGA.

As a sober person I don’t get mocktails? They’re just high calorie drinks. I also don’t think they complement food the way wine does. I’d rather have a dessert than drink my calories.

Prohibition didn’t work? Please explain?

Alcohol was made illegal. People who possessed, made, transported or consumed alcohol were made into criminals. That was exactly the intent of the law. To create new criminals.

Prohibition worked exactly as it was intended to.

Leftists drink more (as a group) than any other people I know. A fair amount of conservatives abstain or consume very little alcohol because many are religious, and a smaller proportion of them are former straight-edge kids who are now adults.

+1, mocktails are abysmally stupid.

For some people, especially if a former federal employee, it’s a choice of either getting beer or paying the utility bill.

What’s to get is they are presumably the highest margin item on a menu. It’s like 20 cents in sugar water for $8 to $12.

Maybe among the lower class. I don’t know anyone UMC or rich who is regularly using weed or edibles outside of maybe once as a gag while on vacation or something.

It doesn't work to create sobriety. I believe Temperance Unions were well-meant, but prohibition didn't accomplish their ends and everyone knew it.

Actually higher SES and liberal inclinations are associated with higher wine consumption. Maybe beer drinkers are more likely to be MAGA.
