Volleyball Clubs Still Looking for U16-U17?

Anonymous
Maryland Juniors instagram says they're looking for particular positions for several teams. The fact they list teams and positions needed would suggest this isn't a ploy to get more people to pay their tryout fee, but rather an actual need.

That might be true, but they also may still need players. You can have hundreds show up and make offers and few accept.

+1
They aren’t a new club and they know how this works. It’s unlikely they are attempting a money grab here if they are confident that all teams are full.
Vienna Elite used to have their own facility and they lost that during Covid shutdown and then over-promised new facility, etc. It seems like those upper years that were normally a powerhouse for them are a bit unpredictable at the moment because those who were with them on the lower teams U11-U14 during Covid scattered after the instability of the on-again/off-again facility thing. So the loyalty they used to cultivate isn’t there and they found it difficult to retain top players.
They do just fine and have a good enough reputation to still be a force, but I believe they would not offer additional clinics if they didn’t still have openings in those age brackets.

What is “utility”? Sorry haven’t heard this term used before. Does it just mean general play-anywhere position?

It would be great if some folks can share some success stories using this resource.

On the surface this seems nice for VAE to “host” a page like this. But it also strikes me that this is the carnage that VAE leaves behind with their practice of absolutely no loyalty to former team members. They are happy to lure skilled players away from a club but then leave them club-less the next year and replace them with a taller player with zero experience the following year.

It also strikes me that the ECP/Renaissance/Mojo shuffle of past season left many former mojo players (U15 and U16) on this list scrambling to find a place to play volleyball. It’s really too bad.

This club told my DD, two years a row, that she was the first alternate on their list and that as long as someone declined an offer she would be getting a call for an offer. Both Fairfax and the one that is in PWC (Kids Choice). Yet then both years they had additional try outs the next week which made no sense. If there was still room on their roster why hadn't my player gotten that follow up offer as promised?

When confronted metro admitted that their roster was full. I went on to hear from a Mojo coach that I knew personally that it is common to tell a player that they're first on your alternate list and then ghost them because either you don't want to hurt their feelings in person or you didn't really watch them at try outs so don't have anything else to say.

Honestly though this seems like a total mojo-move. It tracks with their culture/communication style.

Free? The website says $80 and that’s what we recently paid. Where do you see free?

To be fair, the email that went out to players probably said FREE bc those receiving the email already paid to attend tryouts.
So someone just reposted an email.

On the website it’s $80 bc you pay that if you have t already come to a tryout with them before. At least that would be my guess.

That is consistent with my experience with them.

Yes and we know several former players who haven’t received offers yet while they continue to hold tryouts and already saw 100s of girls.

But that is their answer to those players—is it not?
A club can choose to not extend an offer to former players for any number of reasons. This can include that their level of play did not show growth or if the club was able to retain players with stronger skills and they need to round out the team with other players at that level OR there could be an attitude issue or parent issue or any number of things.
In this case, it’s probably better for everyone if the club director were to provide direct feedback—and in the case of VE I’m surprised if that isn’t happening.

Thx for posting this.

Dd is so upset she didn't make it on and now we are desperately scrambling. Unfortunately, it's a narrow field since a lot of the places listed are too far (Maryland, Chantilly, Manassas).

X-Factor is having their final makeups/callbacks tonight 8-9:30pm at the Franconia Rec Center for 16/17. Doesn't have the Metro name but we like the coaches, players and parents there.

There was a separate thread about this last year. My player was a victim in this shenanigans and it was so hurtful and unprofessional. And I still have not gotten my refund for the clinics I paid for that they canceled 1 week before try outs (where they told all their former players sorry but we aren't going to be a club anymore after all, 1 week before tryouts). Unreal.

I agree. My daughter (new to vb) played there two seasons ago. She’s since moved for logistical reasons but strongly considered returning. Excellent coaching, good practice facilities and the players and families are very nice.

Vienna Elite just announced a new “gray” team for 15/16s which will be a step above rec but below their regional and national teams. Comprised of nine 15s and nine 16s. Will play local one day tournaments TBD and have rotating coaches from the travel program. Tryouts tomorrow.
