Can someone explain BRF last names? I’m so confused.

On the birth certificates of his kids Harry was Duke of Sussex as last name, not Mountbatten-Windsor. So now the kids will go by Sussex, the way William’s kids go by Cambridge now with his new title.

William’s kids now go by Wales after William became Prince of Wales.

No, he was Prince of Wales and became Duke of Cambridge upon his wedding. Same with Harry, first Prince of Wales and then Duke of Sussex.

William became Prince of Wales when the Queen died in 2022. He was given the title Duke of Cambridge after his wedding in 2012, and his children were enrolled in school with the last name Cambridge. Now that he has a “higher level” title than Duke of Cambridge, they will be George/Charlotte/Louis Wales, just like William and Harry were known as William Wales and Harry Wales in college and the military. I believe on the children’s birth certificates both William and Kate didn’t even use a last name.

To;dr, their “family name” is Mountbatten-Windsor (really, it’s just Windsor), but informally their last name is their title or their father’s.

No! He grew up Prince of Wales.

Charles was Prince of Wales until 2022.

So glad Meghan got out of there. the princesses that marry in are always in danger. Reminds me of the upcoming Netflix movie damsel. I hope Kate gets better. Seems like William is the type that would metaphorically throw her to the dragons just like his dad did.

It’s not like they are doing the paperwork now is it? “Ummm William, have you completed and mailed the form that changes our last name from Buckingham to Palace and back dear?”

Because it doesn’t really matter for them.

+1 It's ever changing because it's not a big deal. It's probably easier for them to use their title as anyway. plus it's prettier lol

This Wikipedia article is very informative: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountbatten-Windsor

If you are a member of the BRF and have an HRH or HM, you don’t really have a surname

William and Harry were born to THE Prince of Wales (Charles)

They were Prince William of Wales and Prince Harry of Wales. The use of Wales as a surname when needed is an informal choice. Just as Lady Louise is actually HRH Princess Louise, but has chosen not to be styled as such.

When William and Harry were created Royal Dukes, those titles carry higher rank. They were still Princes of Wales, but then used Cambridge and Sussex when needed. Williams children were born Princes and Princess of Cambridge. Harry’s were not acknowledged initially but were born Prince and Princess of Sussex

Now William is THE Prince of Wales, a unique Princely title which outranks the royal dukes. He and his family therefore use Wales now

Technically, they are of the House of Windsor and would use it as a surname Mountbatten-Windsor. As the titles fall off in subsequent generations and they do have a surname, it is Mountbatten Windsor

It was noted in the media that Prince William filled out his first two children's birth certificates himself. There are photographs of them online. They were notable for describing the parents' occupations as Prince and Princess of the UK.

They had no actual title until they got married, then were styled Dukes of Sussex/Cambridge by the Queen. Now that Charles is King, he has granted William the Prince of Wales title in addition, which is a better title.

This is in contrast to Diana. She was Diana, the Princess of Wales because she was married to Charles, but she was not Princess Diana because she was not born a princess.

Diana was Princess Charles just like Meghan is Princess Henry.

Totally random question: does Camilla now outrank Charles’ siblings since becoming Queen?

Yes. But once Charles dies, William can strip her and her children of all of their titles and honors.

Queen Consort.

I believe yes and no and I base this belief on what I read about Kate and Meagan.

When Camilla is with Charles, she outranks his siblings. When she is by herself, she does not outrank the siblings.

Like I said, I think I read that about Kate and Meagan.

When Kate is with William, the Edwards/Sophies/Andrews/Annes et. al would have to curtsy to her. When she is not with William, they wouldn't have to curtsy to her.

I didn't think Camilla's children have any titles or honors?
