I live in nyc and my just 14yo has been taking Uber for about a year. So have all her friends (and many more were taking it earlier than that). I feel safer with her doing that than taking the subway home alone late, though she typically just takes the subway everywhere. She typically isn’t coming home later than 9, but if she were I would be fine with it, especially as I get a notification whenever she gets a ride. And if another parent is stating until the car picks her up that’s an extra level of protection. As does the Uber teen feature which only allows for more highly screened drivers.

This. A 13 year old doesn’t need to be playing sports until 10 at night. What time does he go to bed? |
I have a 12.5 yo (7th grader) and wish she could take Uber from Georgetown to Chevy Chase following the end of her 8:45 pm basketball practice. Alas, I leave my 10 year-old home alone (with full access to hardwired phone + texting/calling on iPad) while waiting at her practices since I don't trust Uber drivers to safely bring home a tween/early teen. I have a husband but he travels a lot and/or is still working for his West coast-based company that time of night. |
not a chance. |
I would do it in that situation. I definitely wouldn't drive my two year old for an hour each week at 10pm, that seems more dangerous to me. |
How? |
How do you end up a single mom with a 13 yr old and a 2 yr? Not trying to be snarky just trying to imagine the scenario. |
I'm not a single mom, but I'm not sure what's hard to imagine. I had kids over an 11 year spread, and then got divorced. |
Why can’t you get her? |
I wouldn’t be comfortable with an Uber on regular basis, and having my kid ride at 10 pm with a different driver every week or more often than that.
Can you look for someone who could either pick up on regular basis, or sit for an hour with your younger kids while you pick up your older child? |
No, I would not let my kid take an Uber alone at 10pm.
I let my newly turned 14 yo son take an Uber with a friend to or from sports during the daylight for a year when practices started before we got out of work. Never alone and always with a friend. I would say no to the activity or take the 2 year old in the carseat sleeping for pick up. |
Op, is this a one time activity or will it be recurring? |
OP is your child a boy or girl? If a girl, it’s a hard no for me. A boy, maybe. |
Paying a neighborhood teen to sit in your house with your sleeping kids might be the real solution - would probably cost less than a 30m Uber too |
Because I have 2 other children and a job and can’t be in 3 places at once. |
