Ukrainian victory over Russia is inevitable

It’s not acceptable to Human Rights Watch:

“New Human Rights Watch research found that Ukrainian cluster munition rocket attacks on Russian-controlled areas in and around the city of Izium in eastern Ukraine during 2022 caused many casualties among Ukrainian civilians. Both countries should stop using these inherently indiscriminate weapons, and no country should supply cluster munitions because of their foreseeable danger to civilians.

“Cluster munitions used by Russia and Ukraine are killing civilians now and will continue to do so for many years,” said Mary Wareham, acting arms director at Human Rights Watch. “Both sides should immediately stop using them and not try to get more of these indiscriminate weapons.”

Can you remember when Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International were legitimate organizations?

Yes, it's a long time ago.

Ukraine wil use cluster munitions to help clear Russian occupied trenches in Ukrainian territory. Unlike the Russians, who were using them on civilians in Kherson and elsewhere

The false equivalency is ridiculous

I don’t think you understand the chief objection to cluster munitions.

I don't think you understand how awful trench warfare is.

Ukrainians made a calculated decision. A small percentage of cluster munitions fail to detonate - about 3 percent. Every time they are used the location will be mapped and cleared when it is safe to do so. The entire front line - nearly 900 km - is already heavily mined. It'll be years until it's safe to live there. A few cluster munitions do not meaningfully add to those dangers.

In the meantime, fewer Ukrainian soldiers will need to die as they move through Russian trenches.

If Russia weren't illegally invading Ukraine, there would be zero cluster munitions being used, by either side. Thus, if you don't like it, you should be complaining to the Kremlin, not here.

Sad that they were totally oversupplied this past winter? Sorry your dire predictions didn’t come true.

Every middle class American should be able to afford a British butler, an Italian chef, a French gardener, and a German tutor

Europeans are gonna be so desperate they’ll be coming to 🇺🇸 to take odd jobs

Blow up the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Putin just “promised” he would not do that.

Let’s take a look at Putin’s promises:

Russia will peacefully separate from Ukraine and other republics comprising the Soviet Union"
"Russia will guarantee the security of Ukraine in exchange for giving up nuclear weapons"
"Russia will have free and safe elections"
"Russia will not raise the pension age"
"Russia will never alter it's Constitution"
"Russia will never have another Tsar or Premier"
"Russia will not allow private militias"
"Russia will keep Wagner entirely independent from the Russian state"
"Russia will uphold the sovereignty of neighbors and partner states"
"Russia will keep out of the direct affairs of friendly states"
"Russia will never attack Ukraine"
"Russia will never retreat or lose territory"
"Russia will never send trainees to war"
"Russia will never conduct mobilization"
"Russia will never blow up the Kakhovka Dam"

["Russia will not blow up the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant"] - you are here.

But, but, but! Everyone should be in support of this war!
I mean okay I am speaking as someone who doesn’t care one yota for Ukraine sovereignty but don’t you people see that the other side is unhinged?! Why are you happy to risk so many innocent lives just to stick it to them?
Don’t bother responding, I know I will hear another “but democracy and freedom is on the line” retort.
I am a just a small person and I don’t care.

So if you don't care about Ukraine sovereignty, nobody should. Got it. Do you draw the line anywhere, or does Russia get to conquer whatever they want? Are you in a safe geography that they can't get to so it's all good?

You seriously think Russia will conquer anyone after what transpired in this attempt?!
It’s a made up argument. The war needs to stop, even if it’s not completely to the liking of armchair warriors

It’s not ideal for it to end

Biden is managing this perfectly

Keep it simmering for years on end as long as Zelenskyy is willing to expend gentile Ukrainians to grind Russia down

Until he unnecessarily escalated our involvement by sending controversial cluster bombs. Now Ukraine gets to bomb innocent Russian civilians on the American taxpayer's dime.

Lol - one could only hope. Unfortunately the 155s cannot reach Russian soil.

And there are no innocent Russians.

Despite the billions of arms provided to Ukraine, their counteroffensive has run into a brick wall of anti-armor mines, defensive fortifications, and Russian air superiority. Unfortunately, it looks like this war is boiling down to a WW1 type stalemate at tremendous human cost. Realistically Russia is so weakened that it doesn't pose a foreseeable threat to NATO members, so I think it's appropriate for the US to start pushing for a negotiated settlement, which basically boils down to some degree of continued Russian occupation.

I agree with this and I think we will be seeing some moves along these lines in the fall

No big deal.

It’s not like Ukraine is kidnapping children en masse or copping off prisoners of war heads.

That is all ISIS and Russians.
I personally would prefer napalm. E dropped on the trenches but Ukraine does not have the aircraft for that (yet).
Napalm is way more terrifying, and one of the worst ways known to die.

Then you should not prefer napalm. You should push for NATO to offer air supremacy to Ukraine - modern military advantages that will shorten the war and save lives.

Go away, all you horrible torturers with your banned weaponry. By the way, Europe wanted to send jets to Ukraine months ago, and is against cluster munitions. The only moron here is the US, who stalled the jet fighter process and now wants to send inhumane weapons to the front line to "make-up" for it.

Just because Russia started this stupid war, and has committed atrocities, it should not mean we have to stoop to their level when we have other means at our disposal.

This is so frustrating and irritating.

- European

Um - the ONLY country on earth where Ukraine plans to use cluster munitions is: within its own borders. And Russia is already indiscriminately using their rotten 40% dud-rate cluster munitions in its unprovoked war against a peaceful neighbor.

Shouldn’t Ukraine be give the means to free itself from Russian tyranny?

And don’t give me this “European” crap. My family lives in Europe; I want a peaceful future for my family there, which is why I am with Biden in supporting this war.

Peaceful European coexistence with Putin is not possible; I feel sorry for you if you are too blind to see that obvious truth.

Your family must be in Poland or the Baltics, amirite? Familiar histrionics

It's just ridiculous we're at the cluster bomb stage when we could have bypassed all that by giving them air supremacy in the first place.

Ukrainians are forced to thank NATO and friendly countries for all their (very significant) help, but no one gave them fighter jets last year.

It's just mind-boggling the misplaced priorities here that end up costing lives and money.

Unless there’s something to the theory of one of the posters that the goal is to just kill as many Slavs as possible

A silly theory since the non-Russian countries are sitting on the sidelines.

The only one on the road towards demographic extinction is Russia, and it's self-inflicted.

Apropos "Russia is a global pariah" crowd:

We are in the middle of our summer vacation: Netherlands, Greece and Turkey. TONS of Russians everywhere, particularly the latter. Whole industries built around serving them, signs in Russian everywhere in touristic quarters, pretty much every waiter in Cappadocia can communicate in Russian. So, I don't really know where the global pariah thing comes from but Russians and their money are 100% welcome everywhere where money is changing hands.

Russia is a country. Individual Russians are not pariahs, unless they are on the sanctions list.
