Youngkin is part of it: “election integrity” platform despite no problems with our election; not condemning his surrogate amanda Chase for her campaigning on the “stolen election” fraud at rallies for him; not condemning and disavowing his supporters pledging to a flag used at the insurrection.

The evidence is clear. It’s mystifying why people are more engaged on made-up culture wars than actual facts.

Made up culture wars?

Covering up sexual assault by a School Board is not a made-up culture wars. Lying to the public is not a made-up culture war.
Graphic novels with illustrations of people having sex is not appropriate in a school library.

No one is "banning books." Parents should have a say for what is appropriate in schools. Choosing appropriate materials and objecting to inappropriate materials is not "banning books." Where would you draw the line in schools? Fifth grade? First grade?

Banning books is prohibiting books from being published or sold.

Good news then.

You already have the choice today to opt your kids out of books / certain assignments.

Problem solved.

I am a parent and I was never given this option. Please link, thanks.

Sure. Which school system & what grade(s)?

Here is general FCPS info:
https://www.fcps.edu/registration/opt-out-forms

For every “sensitive” topic or book so far, we have been notified in advance, given specific instructions on how to opt-out, and were provided with alternatives.

I'm also a FCPS parent and have never received opt-out notification about books. As I said in an earlier post, I probably wouldn't opt my kids out of reading most assigned books - but I absolutely would have if "Beloved" had been on their reading lists. I could barely get through the harrowing sexually graphic scenes myself. No way would I put my child through that.

There is nothing in the FCPS opt-out forms that enables parents to opt out of students’ reading assignments. You can opt out of student surveys on certain sensitive topics or opt out of having your student listed in school directories, etc.

We get notified 1-2x a year plus FLE.

8th & 9th in APS.

Here is the law:
https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=161&typ=bil&val=Hb516

You are posting a link to a 2016 bill providing for parental notification that McAuliffe vetoed (and the Virginia House was one vote short of being able to override his veto).

Some of these posters are just... not very bright.

Sorry - wrong link! I’ll dig it out in the morning.

Every high school English syllabus my three kids in FCPS
has had a listing of the possible books that will be read as well as a paragraph about parents being able to opt out of any of the books and have their child receive a substitute book. I think they also suggest websites to learn about the books. It always seemed crazy to me but I guess we have a lot of parents who want to restrict access to books.

So this is yet another made up issue. What that Beloved lady wanted, as well as the one who spoke against lgbtq books wanted, was to ban these books in the schools. I can’t believe we still have book banners and in 2021 they’re being celebrated by a candidate for Governor!

Longtime FCPS parent here. We've definitely been given FLE opt-out options, but I can't remember one time I've heard about opting out of assigned reading. Or at least a warning that said reading contained sexually graphic scenes. I probably wouldn't opt my child out, but it would definitely be nice to be given a heads-up.

Do you not read your kid’s syllabus? We always had to sign and send them back pre-covid.

OK. So basically a lot of signaling. Not practical policy.

What potential proposals does Youngkin support that tear down democracy? More machine audits? Voter roll audits? Voter verification? Does that frighten you?

I'm all for it. In fact, who *wouldn't* be in favor of as many ways to safeguard our elections as possible? Oh, right. Democrats.

Do you like the new Republican state laws that allow legislators to decide who won an election rather than follow the election outcome?

Elect Youngkin and the GOP in Virginia, and this is where we'll end up - legislators sending lists of hundreds of book titles to schools to "initiate an inquiry into school district content."

Krause's letter provides a 16-page list of about 850 book titles and asks the districts if they have these books, how many copies they have and how much money they spent on the books.

His list of titles includes bestsellers and award winners alike, from the 1967 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Confessions of Nat Turner” by William Styron and “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates to last year's book club favorites: “Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women that a Movement Forgot” by Mikki Kendall and Isabel Wilkerson's “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.”

But race is not the only thing on the committee chair’s list. Other listed books Krause wants school districts to account for are about teen pregnancy, abortion and homosexuality, including “LGBT Families” by Leanne K. Currie-McGhee, “The Letter Q: Queer Writers’ Notes to their Younger Selves” edited by Sarah Moon, and Michael J. Basso’s “The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality: An Essential Handbook for Today’s Teens and Parents.”

Here’s one link about the rash of Republican-led states passing laws that give legislators power over election officials: https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2021/07/28/republican-legislators-curb-authority-of-county-state-election-officials?amp=1

McAuliffe is a liar. A sign of desperation.

You've made this claim before. Name the school (s). I have to read and sign all syllabi, now that my children are in privates. I never was given any syllabi in LCPS, only pointed to the worthless pacing guides. Maybe FCPS is truly better.

McAuliffe buys 'fake news' ads in effort to sway voters, Fox News investigation finds

Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe has spent nearly $100,000 advertising "fake news" websites on Facebook during the Virginia gubernatorial campaign, Fox News can reveal.

The Democrat's advertisements, which have been viewed up to 3.5 million times so far, are hidden on a Facebook page with a similar name to a local news website. The ads link to third-party websites that ostensibly publish local news, but exist to promote Democratic candidates. The websites have been widely described as disinformation and "partisan propaganda."

The revelation comes less than a week before election day, and as the candidates fight for every last vote, with polls showing McAuliffe and rival Republican Glenn Youngkin locked in a tight battle.

The McAuliffe campaign’s advertisements are sophisticated and opaque.

Like most candidates, McAuliffe operates a Facebook page under his own name to promote his campaign. But the former governor also operates another Facebook page that blurs the lines between a political campaign and disinformation.

The page is called "The Download Virginia," and it was quietly launched by McAuliffe in June. While the name of the page sounds similar to that of a news organization, the page has not published any posts or photos, and only 67 people have "liked" the page (a term Facebook uses to describe followers).

Instead, most voters who have encountered "The Download" have done so through paid advertising. The ads do not appear on the page itself but can be obtained through a Facebook Ad Library Report, a tool used by journalists and researchers. The McAuliffe campaign has spent $471,044 on ads distributed by this page since June. With several ads running at time of publication, that number is likely to rise before election day.

The advertisements generally contain a comment and a link to a mainstream news article that covers the campaign favorably. But sprinkled among the links to legitimate media are seven separate advertisements (and dozens of variations) that promote websites widely considered to be "fake news".

I would have thought McAuliffe would have run a campaign that focused more on his accomplishments as Governor and those of his successor, and not focused almost entirely on linking his opponent to Trump or lining up a string of more popular Democratic politicians to shill on his behalf.

The take-away is that he’s not proud of his own record, let alone Northman’s; he knows people are receptive to Youngkin, who seeks to unite rather than divide Virginians; and the charisma of politicians like Obama and Abrams will never be enough to compensate for McAuliffe’s own glaring inauthenticity.

Face it, Terry. You were a jerk when you rushed in and kicked Jennifer McClelland and Jennifer Carroll Foy to the curb; a hypocrite when you sought Ralph Northam’s endorsement after you’d previously called on him to resign; and a washed-up hack when you resort to lies during your campaign on public health and other issues.
