Good news then. You already have the choice today to opt your kids out of books / certain assignments. Problem solved. |
He’s not very forthcoming with his plans. He says he can’t discuss until he wins the “independent vote”. |
I am a parent and I was never given this option. Please link, thanks. |
The only opt-out option I was aware of was for FLE and a survey or two. |
Sure. Which school system & what grade(s)? |
LCPS, 6th and 8th |
Here is general FCPS info: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/opt-out-forms For every “sensitive” topic or book so far, we have been notified in advance, given specific instructions on how to opt-out, and were provided with alternatives. |

These activities include a student survey, analysis, or evaluation that concerns one or more of the following eight areas: 1. political affiliations or beliefs of the student or student’s parent(s); 2. mental or psychological problems of the student or the student’s family; 3. sexual behavior or attitudes; 4. illegal,anti-social,self-incriminating,ordemeaning behavior; 5. critical appraisals of others with whom respondents have close family relationships; 6. legally recognized privileged relationships, such as with lawyers, doctors, or ministers; 7. religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or parents; or 8. income, other than as required by law, to determine program eligibility. This requirement also applies to the collection, disclosure, or use of student information for marketing purposes (“marketing surveys”) and certain physical exams and screenings. At present, a schedule of activities requiring parental notice and consent or opt-out is not available for the upcoming school year. If surveys and activities are scheduled after the school year begins, LCPS will provide notification to parents or guardians, allowing them a reasonable period of time to opt their child out. Parents will also be provided an opportunity to review the survey.” I’m sure you’ve seen this a few times already if you have an 8th grader… https://www.lcps.org/Page/212723 |
Huh, didn’t happen for us in LCPS. What grade? |
We get notified 1-2x a year plus FLE. 8th & 9th in APS. Here is the law: https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=161&typ=bil&val=Hb516 |
+100 I'm all for it. In fact, who *wouldn't* be in favor of as many ways to safeguard our elections as possible? Oh, right. Democrats. |
+1 Longtime FCPS parent here. We've definitely been given FLE opt-out options, but I can't remember one time I've heard about opting out of assigned reading. Or at least a warning that said reading contained sexually graphic scenes. I probably wouldn't opt my child out, but it would definitely be nice to be given a heads-up. |
DP. Don't be obtuse. Youngkin has unequivocally said Biden won the election. Period. The only people spreading "the big lie" are Democrats, who seem unable to stop lying. |
I'm also a FCPS parent and have never received opt-out notification about books. As I said in an earlier post, I probably wouldn't opt my kids out of reading most assigned books - but I absolutely would have if "Beloved" had been on their reading lists. I could barely get through the harrowing sexually graphic scenes myself. No way would I put my child through that. |
You are posting a link to a 2016 bill providing for parental notification that McAuliffe vetoed (and the Virginia House was one vote short of being able to override his veto). |
