Bethesda Soccer On Way Down

On the BSC Boys little side, I can't think of one kid from 2014-2017 who is playing up on the top team.

Both BSC and VDA are very good at developing. Truth.

BSC discourages kids from playing up regardless of their talent and size

Probably driven by parental and player jealousy and wanting to avoid the drama

That's tricky, playing up might be better for a younger player but that kid is taking the spot/time of another player in that age group.

If they're playing up, it's their spot and time

They're not guesting

Tell that to the last kid cut from the top team, the club doesn't know what 10 year old will be in the top 5 in five years.

So, the current top year team in each age group should be exclusively for kids in that age? So, if that kid a year below is in the top 1/3 even when playing up, he should stay in his age group, dominate, and not improve thus stalling his development? Simply because he earned the right to the spot but you want preferential access to 1st team? Do I have this right?

Anything wrong with playing 2nd team and earning your way to 1st team?

I am trying to put myself in the club's shoes. There are plenty of clubs like SYC that will push kids up, I think it's really the parents, a 10 year old isn't pushing to play with older players. If you want your kid to play up, there are plenty of clubs that will do it - probably not Bethesda. They've also lost lots of players to DC United, many of whom were playing up because they were the best players. So, the club loses out again.

Why say pushing to play up?
Are the clubs moving a kid to an older age group and the kid can't play at the older level?

I would be shocked if clubs like BSC or SYC are moving any kid up without the parents pushing for it. I think it's a way that some clubs will pull players, "hey, we'll play him up". Achilles does that, Juventus does that, BSC does not do that.

You're saying they don't have quality coaches who knows if a early developer needs to play up for more of a challenge?

No, not at all. If a kid is playing on a top team at BSC, he's being challenged. There will always be exceptions, I just don't know any of them right now.

Bethesda just doesn't want kids to play up and weaken their original age group team

Kid is scoring hat tricks every game while making the coach and club look good and team parents happy with the W's

While not being challenged

Ball hog or talented, distinction important. Maybe the midfielders and wingers are the talent. Context important unless this is ulittles then who cares anyway.

Anything wrong with playing in your age group? It’s why they have age groups.

Yes there’s something wrong with playing on your first team if you aren’t being challenged. If younger kid plays up and can still be in top 3rd, it helps development. It’s not like the team drops a top third player, they drop one of the last kids take who is in many cases a bubble player going to or from second team anyway.

You need to look at rec if you don’t think kids should have to compete for roster spots. Age groups are there to prevent older kids from playing down. The “U” in U9-U19 stands for under x by certain date. It’s ok to be well under if good enough to compete.

I don't know any kid on a top team at BSC who is so far above his team that he's not being challenged. Are there kids who could play up, definitely. Would it help them, maybe. There 's a 2015 playing for SYC's 2014 team and they're playing up 11v11 against 2013s. Is that in his interest? Maybe, I would argue that he'd be better off playing 9v9, getting more touches, focusing on his development, not getting to 11v11 ASAP.

Yes, pushing to 11v11 early is a sign the club values winning and what it does for the club brand over individual development. More touches and more decisionmaking in small spaces 9v9. Europe plays even more small sided even later. Hard to argue with their results.

Gets the ball, refuses to pass, and whose sole objective is to get off a shot any time they can team be damned.

Not here recommending anything. That’s for coaches/clubs. My point is that if club recommends playing up and family decides it’s right for them, it’s on the kid that is dropped or losing minutes to compete and earn back spot and minutes.

Awesome qualities that good coaches love to see

This timing seems a huge disadvantage for BSC & MD players, especially those tied to VA? The season hasn't started yet to assess whether they like it or want to stay or not; yet ID tryouts for the next year are already happening.

I think it's the same arms race we see every year; more pressure, starts earlier, ends later, more costs, more tournaments, more futsal, private training, U10 playing 9v9, U12 playing 11v11. It's January, the season is barely half over and clubs like SYC are already trying to lock players in for next season. I actually like that Bethesda moves a little slower. We don't need to know the coaches for 26-27 yet, you're either interested in the club or not, the coach will change every year or even mid-year.

Winter ECNL ID sessions announced today seems new, especially announced in January.

Bethesda, as every other club in the area, is a freaking joke. This area has some of the most talented players in the country. A few very good coaches. And terrible clubs. The problem is the system. There’s no future here, unless you quit the system and stick to a coach who cares, guest play around the country, and try to look for opportunities abroad if your passport allows it. Otherwise, forget about soccer and play lacrosse.

Can only be 100% accurate if no player from DC, Maryland or Virginia suburbs has never made it to professional soccer
