What your designer bag says about you

I always thought Brahmin was sort of wanna be but they are so pretty. And made in the US.

Exactly. I thought that too, but then realized I didn't care. I do in fact "wanna be" an older wealthy woman and I'm OK to own up to that. And I do value items made in US.

I'm not sure Brahmin qualifies as "designer bag". Seems like you are paying for the actual cost of the raw materials and the manufacture and not for the design. These aren't cutting edge designs-- just well made.

What about:

Celine

Polene ?

I just want something quality but not garish or ditsy… but I don’t have the money or desire to spend $5-10k on a handbag.

I was going to ask about this! I'm not sure they qualify as "designer" but they are extremely well made. I live on Capitol Hill and see them everywhere-- especially with older woman. I think I'm the youngest to wear them and I'm 50.

Yeah. Not designer but I always thought Brahmin was for older women.

This thread cracks me up. A lot of the commentary is spot on.

I’m a SAHM and have a DH who is a bit embarrassed about my $10 Uniqlo nylon shoulder bag/crossbody. During the baby days I had a pink leather Rebecca Minkoff backpack. I just ordered a Polene Nano to replace my nylon crossbody. Was looking at YSL but too many reports of quality gone downhill. For travel, I still like a good backpack - black leather Target find that I’m sure is a knockoff of some designer.

Yeah. Just like I’m a bit embarrassed by some of his ratty tshirts and my son’s ill fitting double hand me down pants. We all decided to upgrade some stuff now that we are coming out of pandemic lockdown and realize we no longer need to dress like homeless people.

So sad that pages later, it's just you and me on the ESPRIT nostalgia train! My mom found mine during a recent storage cleanup. I could carry one of my kids in that thing!

But, hey, I'm not classy - my current rotation is a Rothy's tote, a vintage tote from an old website with a pithy saying on it, and a leather tote I got at Costco because I liked the color scheme.

Do people still wear these? I think sahm who uses it as a diaper bag now because she had one when she was in college in an east coast city 15 years ago.

Serious question—do you go out in public ever? I see Longchamp totes all over the place, from Metro to shoppers on 5th Avenue to playgrounds to Rasika.

+2 the Longchamp totes are absolutely everywhere. I think they’ve moved past “trend item” and into “unobtrusive staple” category. Kind of like Uggs at this point.

+1

Before covid, it was the basic tote for commuters.

Personally, I prefer my Lo & Sons OG since I often carry two laptops.

Nonetheless, I still have an adorable Longchamp zipper pouch purchased in Paris nearly 30 years ago. I tuck it inside my larger tote when traveling.

Maybe TEN YEARS before Covid. I haven't seen a Le Pliage out in the wild on a fashionable woman in a long time.

They are everywhere in Europe. I see them all the time.

We have the flat coach bags for travel. Just the right size for passport money day trip papers. They are the oldest classic ones. Indescribable.

I like my Brahim bag because it is nice to look at has pockets inside well made and not too expensive. It’s hard for me to think of a handbag as an investment when it has so much use. I don’t want to move my stuff from bag to bag to save in wear.
