Would you support a hard shutdown option for two to four weeks to crush the virus?

Nope. Just slows down spread for a bit.

I would be willing to shut down again if the government were to use this time to do their part as well. When we first shut down the government response was horrible.

I would need 1 day to get some supplies because we have a huge group at our house but we would be good to go for 14 days, even 21 days, if it would make a difference. I also think we should close the borders for that time period. And that the hard shutdown would need to be enforced with significant fines for violation.

You and everyone else would be shopping on that 1 day- what could possibly go wrong??

Yeah, I know!!! But we would need some stuff if we have to go 14 days without replenishing so I don't know what else I can do.... I haven't been stockpiling and am trying to do just-in-time so I don't have a lot to fall back on. Sigh.

NP. I'd do it, my family would be on board too, and it would work if it were enforced. Actually enforced. Serious and very high fines. Arrest if you get in a cop's (or an inspector's or doctor's or anyone's) face about being caught out.

People in this country would lose their minds and scream about the fascist state. We have zero, absolutely zero, idea of real sacrifice or the difference between needs and wants or why some people should accept restrictions temporarily for the greater public good. We tried voluntary and supposedly mandatory "phases" of restriction that depended on people complying as an act of voluntary goodwill. And the price is that we are in worse shape than ever. That's why enforcement is the only way we'll stop a cycle of shutdown-open-infections rise-shutdown-open....

actually, the compliance failure on "phases" was because there was no strong, consistent leadership and, once it was left to States, many Gov's caved for financial/ election conflict of interest..

capitalist greed meets political expedience inside a person with no back bone....lead by a leader who makes them his Bi*tch

You are just delaying the inevitable. The one thing every human is promised is death. Some may die but that is life. Progress at normal pace please. Take precautions and wear your mask everywhere outside your home and you might live to are 2021 and all the goodies it has in store for us.

And yet in Spain infections are creeping back up again. So much for the illusion that these countries “crushed” the virus.

Right.

So WHY do we think a complete shutdown in a country much larger no less, would actually do the trick?

Why can't we accept that this is a part of our reality right now? Why do we feel the need to funnel inordinate amounts of resources - while simultaneously making it so that our resource pool (i.e. the economy) dwindles - into "fighting" something that will likely be with us for a while?

Ww just need to adapt. If you are at risk, mitigate your risk. If you aren't "at risk", practice good hygiene and health.

Also, if you are at risk because of co-morbidities that you created by too many trips to McDonalds and too many Big Gulps, then either get your lifestyle under control or take your chances.

Why is this so hard to comprehend?

Because people who aren’t personally at risk can’t seem to comprehend that their actions still contribute to the spread of a serious pandemic. (And if you get into a car accident, you’d probably like to be treated in a hospital that isn’t overflowing.)

Right.

So let this thing burn through.

If you are at risk: mitigate that risk.

If you aren't a complete idiot: good health, hygiene, and mitigate your risk.

If you ARE a complete idiot: well, the rest of us will be sitting here hoping your gene pool gets chlorinated. No lie.

You can't fix or save stupid, nor should you. That's part of our problem, in the first place. We think we have to fix or save everyone. Look to nature, folks - not every specimen of every species survives.
